Darlene Ferrin was born Darlene Suennen. She lived most of her life with her parents at 130 Jordan Street in Vallejo, Calif. In January 1966, Darlene married Jim Crabtree. They quickly divorced, and Darlene then married Dean Ferrin. She stayed Darlene Ferrin until her death just after midnight on July 5, 1969.As the story goes, around the time of Zodiac's phone call to Nancy Slover, Darlene's parents on Jordan Street received anonymous calls that troubled them enough to mention to the police. If it was really the Zodiac who was responsible for those calls, how did he know the last name of Darlene's parents? Here's the really spooky part: The Suennens weren't listed in the phone book. Not in 1968, 1969 or 1970.Here's my hypothesis: Zodiac knew Darlene prior to her first marriage, back when she was Darlene Suennen and living with her parents. And he knew her well enough to have reason to memorize or otherwise keep the Jordan Street phone number.Back in 1998, Darlene's brother, Leo, claimed it was he who had made the calls. However, he also told me other things that were 100% untrue and, considering Zodiac was indeed making calls around that same time, I believe Zodiac was the most likely culprit.

Tom, you make a strong argument for Zodiac knowing Darlene, and knowing her well enough to have memorized her phone number. Something has always confused me about the night of the BRS attack. Just WHO actually received phone calls that night, when, how many, what was "said," etc. What proof is there that the various phone calls to the Suennens, Dean Ferrin and Dean's parents actually took place? I have heard a number of different scenarios. Can you help separate the wheat from the chaff?thanks!

I respect your opinion, Tom, but honestly, I'm not quite sold on a Darlene connection. The details of Leo's account explain the scenario she was caught up in during that July night pretty well - perhaps a broken clock can give the accurate time of day once in a while. Also, it seems awfully dicey to call up the unlisted home number of someone whom you've just shot, as doing that might alert the cops to the possibility that you're acquanted with the victim (although that's arguably no less risky than wearing a grocery bag on your head in broad daylight, or strolling casually away from a crime scene you've just created). I'd need more concrete evidence before I'm thoroughly convinced...

Even if the Suennens weren't actually ASKED what the voice sounded like, if it WAS Zodiac on the line, I feel they would have volunteered a description of such a distinctive voice.

I thought there was no voice? Just wind in the background, or am I just Graywashed?

Looks like a lot of Graysmithisms are looking plausible, first Z visiting Belli and now this. Maybe one day we'll find the hidden road?

Given the number of children in that family, I'm sure that unlisted number wasn't a state secret. It could have been a call for one of the kids in the house from a friend who didn't want to say anything because they thought someone other than the parents would answer the phone. I won't say that it wasn't Zodiac but there are too many variables to say it was him.

The title of the thread aside, I tried to word the post to show I also wasn't convinced it was Zodiac. But if it was, the fact the Suennens weren't listed is telling. Also, it's similar to the taunting note Joseph Bates received a few years earlier in Riverside.Leo lied to me about several things, and I simply no longer believe him. Like Darlene's sisters, he tries to interject himself into the case at every chance.

Zodiac was eager to talk with the cops that night. Unless he knew the Suennens well enough that he thought he couldn't disguise his voice adequately seems like he would have had something to say, if he indeed had the nerve to call them up. Never seemed to be at a loss for words. Just a thought.
