May 2, 2018:

After 50 years, the Vallejo (Calif.) Police Dept. is still actively pursuing the Zodiac killer, including through all available forensic resources. DNA testing is underway and the results should be available in June 2018.

The hope is the newest DNA testing methods can glean a full genetic profile of the Zodiac that can be used in an Ancestry-type database, which is already being used on another Vallejo cold case with results due this week.

What Zodiac evidence is being tested for DNA? According to Det. Terry Poyser, two envelopes, including the stamps, from the July 31, 1969 letters Zodiac mailed to two San Francisco newspapers; they were originally tested about 10 years ago and approx. 25% of each stamp and a small portion of the adhesive area of each envelope were used for testing. That testing yielded only 5 indicators or so of DNA, which did not match the DNA from Vallejo suspect Arthur Leigh Allen.

There are numerous other Zodiac stamps available to test with the new equipment, which can apparently separate DNA from the old glue found on stamps and envelopes, and thus yield better results. All additional possible DNA evidence is held at the San Francisco Police Dept., including Zodiac stamps, envelopes, gloves, etc.

This is going to take some time.     They will also have to go through databases and funnel it down.   With the Golden State Killer, they had great DNA samples.   Hopefully, they can narrow it down and the profile will match a known suspect.    Then they can maybe get better samples or get a cooperative family member for confirmation.    It would be amazing if they got him and he was still alive.    I have a low opinion of the SFPD.    I think they gave up years ago because they thought Zodiac was dead and didn't want to admit that they missed him.  They may even know who it was but they would have to admit he slipped through their fingers if he was a past suspect and they missed him.    It seems the smaller jurisdictions are doing the heavy lifting these days.   Mr.  Voight had actual dealings with these law enforcement agencies so maybe he can shed some light on how motivated they really are.  Maybe the Golden State arrest breathed some new life into the investigation.

At the very least DNA may eliminate some suspects. But who knows? We could get resolution like with GSK. Here's hoping.

It would be wonderful if they got a full genetic profile, even if it doesn't hit, it would be nice to have something to falsify Zodiac theories with.
