Lived in Napa from 1977-80 in my early teens.  Hadn't heard of the Z-killer until my first week at Redwood Jr. High School which is when I became a part of the geek club in the schools library. The rumor was the Z-killer would slip-out from the Napa mental hospital to perform his killing disappearing magic act.  After learning about this crazy tale every night for one year my  bed-time routine was walking around the entire house to lock all windows and doors. I would go on day trips to Lake Berryessa with friends to swim and locals would explain in detail where Bryan Hartnell and Cecelia Shepherd were attacked by the Z-Killer.  His actions influenced millions of people through his brilliant media interaction strategy, his proven murders were sloppy and lacked the passion in my opinion of someone that enjoyed the kill. Don't get me wrong the man was a murderer but its my feeling he didn't like the act and killed only to proof he was a crazy as his letters stated.  The last episode of the Z-Killer on History Channel gave what I think is the cases biggest clue: Trip to NY.

I'm sure there were only 5 individuals in the Bay area that had the capacity to think at the "The 340 Cipher Solved” level.  Did the authorities consider the following details?
The Z-Killer was an extreme attention seeker who went to unhealthy lengths that were driven by emotional desperation. narcissistic personality disorder as having an excessive sense of self-importance, an intense preoccupation with themselves.
Mind games is used to define three forms of competitive human behaviors:
  1. a largely conscious struggle for psychological one-upmanship, often employing passive–aggressive behavior to specifically demoralize or dis-empower the thinking subject, making the aggressor look superior; also referred to as power games, head games, mind fuckery or head fuckery.
  2. the unconscious games played by people engaged in ulterior transactions of which they are not fully aware, and which transactional analysis considers to form a central element of social life all over the world.
  3. mental exercises designed to improve the functioning of mind and/or personality; see also brain teasers or puzzles.

Attention Seeking
Enjoying the attention of others is socially acceptable in some situations. In some instances, however, the need for attention can lead to new difficulties and may highlight underlying, preexisting ones. However, as a tactical method, it is often used in combat, theatre (upstaging) and it is fundamental to marketing. One strategy used to counter various types of attention-seeking behavior is planned ignoring.
IMO
The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is an annual six-problem mathematical Olympiad for pre-college students, and is the oldest of the International Science Olympiads. The first IMO was held in Romania in 1959. It has since been held annually, except in 1980. About 100 countries send teams of up to six students, plus one team leader, one deputy leader, and observers.
Mind Sports
As well as many board games, chess and card games, other disciplines that have been described as mind sports are speed reading, eSports (video game-based competitions), computer programming and Cryptographic competitions

The Paul Stine murder was to be his last confirmed and for good reason, he should have been caught.  The Z-Killer tried to clean the cab driver’s door for finger prints which makes me think he leaned up on the door to asked if the cab was free. The incident scared him to rethink the game.
Following the Paul Stine murder there few correspondence attempts from the Z-Killer. If Albany Times Union newspaper postmarked August 1st, 1973 is authentic then in my opinion the Z-Killer traveled on work or event related business. I’m thinking at this point he was terrified of getting caught but wanted a mental fix and felt safe enough to mail Albany Letter.

Interesting posts, thanks for sharing...I need a little time to study this more. I've seen and heard about this type of encryption before but not from the book you posted. Do you believe the picture itself including the shapes, lines and shadows that make up the trees and buildings are an actual cipher, if you are you've got my attention.

If the Z used this type of encryption in his cards would suggest to me He's very intelligent possibly very good at math and enjoys art, poetry and music, thinking back on his correspondence to the News.

I've asked people before, have you ever heard of ''The Mikado'' they all reply, ''what the hell is a Mikado''...I say never mind...lol

The codes and Ciphers could only have been thought up by a smart person not a border line idiot with an itch to kill. After Stine the Zodiac was calm. Probably as rightly put he killed for the fun of the chase not the wriggle at the end.

I am a Rick Marshall guy because I think only someone in Theatre would even think of using the Mikado or an Actor producer or Director.

Plus as Navaro the cop said the Silent movies was the biggest hint. To be honest I think he told police in 2008 he did it and they played the game and did a deal. He didn't want relatives or friends affected by it.

Then he did his small d's the same as Z and GIKE. If you think Vaughan covered for him which I do. He probably got a kick out of what Rick did. Two odd fish.

Then the letter to police about the cards and paper used. There is a semi circular mark on the left side of things where did it come from? If he got those cards from a printer it might be possible to trace.

I think he was also the master of disguise but he was shorter than tall so the descriptions could be close or far off. Personally I think the 5 8 ones are correct not sure if someone said he was 5 7.

Regarding the codes etc. He had a lot of time on his hands where he would be alone. Time enough to practice things and redo them. Using his surroundings to guide his imagination. Maybe my name is is just a way to keep people working on the unsolvable. Or it could be a character in a silent movie he loved....and maybe the character did not have a name but a number....

Hi, In the above Do My Thing letter from Z there is a semi circle mark in the lower left. Inside it is some kind of symbol, drawing or maybe even something printed by the card company. Would you please explain what it is? Thanks

First, I really don't understand this blog system because I got your one year old messge today. However, since it is unusually detailed and interesting, I'm responding. I think you hit the nail on the head re: Stine's murder. I haven't read anywhere else that Z probably scared the crap out of himself by almost getting identified at that crime scene. I think you are really astute to point out that this is why Stine turned out to be his last identifiable murder. He almost got nailed! As per your psychoanalysis, it's true that he was clearly narcissistic. And in case you didn't know, personal low self esteem is at the bottom of narcissism. So it also makes sense that someone was putting him down during childhood. BTW, does any of this play into Sullivan's life? He sure seems to be the popular suspect now.
