Tossed this one together just for kicks, it probably won't stick around.

N54 generates RSS feeds of the forums and so since we've never used them for anything I figured it might be fun to mess with them for once. The RSS data is feeding the scrolling link bar in the lower right corner of the forum, showing the 15 most recent threads, updated every half hour.

Like I said, it's more just messing around than anything. RSS is better when used on OTHER websites, as opposed to the same one it's showing info from. It's a little redundant as one could just hit the main page and see everything anyway

Plus I generally avoid things that detract from the simplicity and understated decor here on Xweb, and the RSS scroll does make pages look a tad busy. It's probably going away but I just thought I'd mention it while it's up, as an FYI for the curious

Peace, -Mac

I kind of like this feature! Is there any way of getting it to the top of the page? Is it limited to 15?

Hi John!

I can put it pretty much wherever I want it, within reason. It actually was at the top of the main forum page at first, but that was the epitome of redundancy, since all the threads were immediately below it...

I could get it into a header to appear on every page but if I do that then it becomes really distracting. I just finally settled on the lower right corner as it seemed the only place where the scroll didn't constantly pull the eyes away from everything else.

As for the limitation of 15, RSS itself is not limited by anything but the feed that it receives, but N54 only generates a feed of the 15 most recent threads. I did mention to them it would be even more handy if this could be adjustable, and, if it could be set (on the backend) to generate a feed of the 15 most recent POSTS as opposed to top level threads.

Since N54 v2 is coming out soon, I don't think they're really interested in doing much "improvement" to the existing setup, 90% of all their effort is going into v2 pre-release and the remaining 10% in just keeping the existing system going until then, putting out fires, etc...

Peace, -Mac

...it's actually quite simple the way it's set up right now.

Most times RSS feeds need an aggregator (reader) installed on your machine. There are loads of them out there. Some browsers (not IE though) have RSS readers built in, but this to me is the perfect solution for RSSing single feeds without anyone needing anything, except any browser that can handle JavaScript (pretty much all of them anymore)...

Simply visit this page to view the examples and the code for either a scrolling feed or a list style feed:
For the scrollers, you will want to either keep them on separate html pages or just pick one (DF) or the other (FS&W) as the scrolls seem to conflict if placed on the same html page. I have not tried to run the list styles on the same page, it may work, it may not.

The scrolling feed's code is from http://www.rss-to-javascript.com

The list feed's code is from http://www.bigbold.com/rssdigest/

Any of these versions will work wherever you put them online, as long as N54's RSS feed is available and the conversion code provider's server is up.

OR, if you would prefer to use a stand-alone reader or other method of aggregation, here are the direct RSS links:

DF:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/12159?xml=rss

FS&W:
http://www.network54.com/Forum/112729?xml=rss

Now go forth and put them wherever you want to see "the latest" on Xweb! <IMG height=14 src="/images/happy.gif" width=14>

Peace, -Mac.

On my way there now actually, just wrapping up the RSS code tweak (it was puking about 2/3 the way through the scroll - FIXED)

Good night! -Mac
