I found a number of HACKERS that posted cars at GREAT prices under the banner of EXACTLY what I was looking for.  Say a 1956 Chevy, or a 1934 Ford... and WOW, there it was.

In both cases, when I logged on again, the item was not to be found and the item number was bogus.  One time I carried on an e-mail conversation with one guy who would deliver the car and refund all my money if I wasn't satisfied, for a price that was 20 grand below all others.  He listed a town in NorCal and when I stated I would come up and view the car... he disappeared also!

I also notified ebay on three occasions and (of course) they will look into it... but I haven't seen such a case in many moons...

Maybe...

Vehicle Description

This the lowest mileage X1/9 in the universe......as brand new as you will ever find one. In 2002 this car sold through Barrett Jackson for $9,500.00. At that time I believe this car had 98 miles. It only had delivery miles and had never been sold. It was at Barrett Jackson along with a sister red car with only 55 miles. That red car sold for $11,000.00. These 2 cars came from the collection of a deceased ex-Fiat dealer. I bought this car in 2003 and it has been sitting in my collection ever since. I grew up driving Triumphs nd Fiats and when I came across this car I just had to have it. It now has 148 miles !!!!! That is it......148 miles. I have every spring/summer taken it around the block several times and checked/changed oil and antifreeze every couple of years. The car has never had license plates by me as I have never intended to use it. I have a clear title in hand. Please come inspect the car if you are serious and please do not waste my time with silly requests. This is a no story car....it is brand new. A $500 Paypal deposit is required immediately at auction end and the balance to be paid via Cashier's Check. Good luck

Question & Answer Answered On

Q: Is the car available for inspection. I live in Aurora, IL. Mar-06-08
A: Late afternoon Friday....after 3-3:30 I will be home and Saturday after office hours as well.....after 5-5:30 p.m.
Q: I live in Wilmette and would to come look at the car in person. I also work in Evanston so I am rather flexible on schedule. Is the time that is convenient for you. Todd Mar-06-08
A: Todd, Friday late afternoon and Saturday evening would be good with me. Saturday I will be in my office until 5 p.m......Friday until 3 p.m. It has been a crazy week.....last night I got home at 11:00 p.m. and today looks like a repeat.
Q: Hi, I have two questions. First, is the interior and are the window seals and weather stripping like new too? Second, I was just getting ready to restore my 1980 x1/9. If I wanted to buy yours instead and if I have prior financing lined up, would you work with me after I pay the deposit to furnish the financing institution with the car information and wait a short time for the check from the institution? I too grew up with Triumphs and Fiats. It must run in our blood...Roger Mar-06-08
A: Interior/weather stripping/seals are as they left the factory. This car IS brand new and climate control maintained throughout its life.....never sat outside, etc. If you are serious and give me a deposit I will work with you. I definitely do not want to see this car end up in the hands of someone that will drive it to the ground.....would much rather prefer it in the hands of someone like myself that appreciates cars/design/etc. and will maintain this piece of automotive art as it is.
Q: I hope you don't consider this a sill ? Do you have any of the original documentation on this car? Original sticker price, manuels? Thank you. S.L. Mar-06-08
A: I have the original owner's manual in the car but not sure if I have the window sticker in there.
Q: I would like to see it ,first. Call me at 630-915-8098. Mar-06-08
A: Schedule has been crazy this week.....got home at 11:00 p.m. last night......today will be a repeat......but Friday afternoon and Saturday evening after my office hours will be fine. Thanks.
Q: Are there any issues with the car, dings, scratches, mechanical mysteries? Is the A/C charged/working? What about rubber: seals, tires, hoses? Mar-06-08
A: There are two minor scratches that can be touched up.....were there when I bought the car and were no issue to me......I just never got around to taking care of them as they never bothered me. There are no mechanical mysteries......this is a brand new car and I have maintained it well. Last I drove it around the block was in October 2007 and everything was fine then. The A/C was working fine last I tried it a couple years ago when I gave it an oil change and checked on things. Rubber/seals/tires/hoses all fine.....car has been in climate controled garage while in the original collector's place and my garage too is heated and air conditioned.
Q: any more pictures to see?? u show nothing not even interior. Please let me know . would love to own car but i need a little more info. Mar-06-08
A: Interior is full black leather......no cloth......and looks as it did when it left the factory. Like I said.....this is a no story car.....it is brand new. I will try get pictures up by Saturday.

Hi Mac,

I was keeping bookmarks to all the X auctions on Ebay, but since they changed the policy to delete old auctions after 90 days, my links are all worthless.

How about creating a section in Xweb 2.0 to tack Ebay, or any other auction/sale. I started tracking the Ebay auctions after seeing the same cars show up year after year. It was interesting to track their movement and price.

This wouldn't be a "for sale" category, more archival in nature. Much like you have done for this car, anyone posting a thread will need to post the text and photos, not just he link.

Just a thought.

jd

thanks,

Jim Decker - Missouri, USA

I too would be cautious about any transaction on ebay that has any price higher than I would be willing to just throw out my window on the freeway if it turned out somehow not to be legit (ten grand and up is way way beyond my cheap threshold too btw)

In this case though I am kind of leaning toward the "side deal" theory expressed by JJ as well as some other "x1/9 pundits" here because we actually know this is a real car with a traceable history right here in this forum in fact. So it's not just any random X but a specific one that's been on our collective radar before.

Even still anything is theoretically possible so healthy skepticism/caution apply regardless. That is just the nature of buying anything over the internet especially cars

Peace, -Mac

Just a thought.

jd

thanks,

We do already have such a section it's called FS&W but you are right it is good to archive at least the historically relevant offerings which is why we tend to either discuss or transplant those in the DF. The Xweb 2.0 system is alive but the user interface & forum structure is still in its embryo state with a long road of tweaks and mods ahead. I will definitely keep this thought in mind next time I log into it to play around some more...

Peace, -Mac

.
I rarely do post ad links myself but when I do I always try to "Capture" as much detail into my Xweb posts' text box as I can (especially since sites like ebay, craigslist auto trader etc ads always expire sooner or later) and even imageshack the pics to include if I can
