They are 6x4. Many older Vw's had these speakers fitted, and most of the good companies do custom fits to suit.

I recently installed some 4 x 6 Metric speakers in the rear deck. BLAUPUNKT is what I ended up using. Although Pioneer makes that size as well. Crutchfield carries them, but I found them cheaper on EBay. A link to the crutchfield choices: <a href="http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/ ... 1&avf=N</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.crutchfield.com/App/Product/ ... 1&avf=N</a>
The speaker grills won't fit. I was able to get a set of grills from FS&W from Bob Brown. I think Matt at Midwest has some rear grills available.

looking at the stock cut-outs in the rear deck, it just looks like 6x4 is too big, guess I was wrong... 6x4 is a common size...

All brands' 4x6 speakers sound like aluminum foil. There's just not enough cone, and not the right shape nor depth, to reproduce anything below 100hz accurately, nor to deliver it at a decent volume to overcome the beautiful roar of a 1300 or 1500 behind your head.

Best bet? Probably the Pyle 4x6's that I just found on eBay:

Pyle has become a serious contender in the car audio world, and boasting specs like these, especially 70hz as a low end freq response, and 90w RMS- that's nice. And then an eBay buy it now price that low?
Go get 'em!

The 4X6M will fit in the cutout provided. They are not as long though. The grills cover the difference. Also not a lot of depth on the drivers side.

The cut out is longer than the actual 4X6 speaker. But the width is fine. The speaker has plenty around it to hold it securely.
