any ideas welcome..on my 1980 FI x ive noticed a
dramatic loss of power.. in 2nd or third gear when i try
to get rpms above 4000 rpms...engine hits a wall..and
wont turn faster or accellerate. i also notice kind of
a different sound from engine at that point like a pressure drop or slight swishing air sound. what do you
think...fuel pump..injectors...? dont have much experience
with fuel injection...last x was 75 carb model. thanks for any direction. dan in nm

You can get a cheap pressure gauge at Harbor Freight to test your fuel pressure. Just remove the fuel line off the cold start valve (carefully pull it off because it's plastic) and hook the gauge in there.

... the FI Troubleshooting Guide in the Best Of section...

It will walk you through a SYSTEMATIC process to find the problem.  Otherwise you'll be all over the map...

As and OVERALL guess though... the EFFECT does sound like a fuel pressure issue... but the CAUSE could be several things, the filter being the easiest to check first.

Do let us know how you progress...

The swooshing sound is making me wonder if you have an air leak between the AFM and the cylinders.

I'd second this diagnosis. Look for a crack in the main air hose, you may need to remove it to find it. It could be as simple as the hose not seated properly on the throttle body.

It could also be a loos hose or vacuum line. For instance, the Fuel Pressure Regulator and Vacuum Advance both have small vacuum lines that connect to the manifold, the advance one goes to the bottom of the throttle body, the FPR goes to a tee on the manifold end.

Also check the Air Flow Meter's flap for free movement, it should swing smoothly without binding.
