Hi all,

I'm getting around to replacing the same K&N air filter model that's been on the system for sometime.

I've always used a K&N E-2350. The 6.5" long and round thingy. attached to the existing FI system. This air filter when mounted, points down into the dark evil recesses of knuckle scraping and prodigious noise making areas.

From the best of section I noticed that there is the K&N R-1380.
http://www.knfilters.com/search/product ... rod=R-1380

Which is tapered and probably could mount in the horizontal, which might, though not without a lot of debate, be appropriate as the straight run, in line airflow into the FI system.

And it might look better, but how does the E-2350 compare to the R-1380?

Anyway ...

or something very like it is what I have. It does mount inline and horizontally. I recently asked Matt Brannon about the efficacy of this and he thought it was fine. I think it is the common solution around here, although having seen how much bigger a filter can be had in the arrangement you are currently running I am having thoughts in that direction.

I use a Fujita filter w/ a 2.5" opening base on my X. Fits mounted horizontally on the stock rubber elbow perfectly, Although I am looking for ways to open up some room around it and direct cold air from the side to it. They are rather expensive though, I bought mine at Autobacs for $50, found them online for a bit less. My RX7 friends tuning shop highly recommended them.

... there is gonna be a slight advantage. With all the bends and double backs that the air must do to finally get to the combustion chamber in our cars, I doubt that you are gonna feel any difference.

The 2350 versus the 1380 and using the elbow versus not using it will probably not make any difference. I would prefer using a straight shot.

Additionally, in CA, a K&N filter could cause one to flunk the "visual inspection" for a smog certificate. I'm not sure if it is the 2350, but a similar one was mounted INSIDE the stock can with holes drilled around the can's perimeter so it breathed easier and something like that would not be noticed by the inspector.

As far as any K&N filter goes... they all work... and work well to some degree over the stock type paper elements. I use one on my carbed '79 in the original can and I could tell a difference immediately.

... the left side vent and made a gentle bend coming up.... cut baqk the snorkel so I had a 2 1/2 inch opening and connected 3 feet of flexible heater hose between the two. I also run a K&N filter in the stock aircleaner can. Works great!

Mine's a carbed version, but using the stock FI can, it could still be done. Of course you are almost at the same place if you simple went down and foward, but would get a bunch more crap to filter.

I find even the left vent is kinda low as I notice the filter gets plenty dirty, plenty fast. I think turning and all with the LF tire kicking up debri contributes greatly to the mess.

BUT, I love the slight performance gain and cooler running mill. Definately worth the trouble.

significantly louder as well.I st mine up with a base air horn and outer end flow shaper(like the pictured one) and have my FI manifold bell mouthed. All that is likely making the intake louder than average. My exhaust isn't quiet, but the intake often drowns it out.
