Got an issue

I know your going to laugh at my stupidity...........

It all started this afternoon when after what seemed like a life time I finally got my new wheels and tyres delivered........yep a simple task of off with the old and on with the new. No real issues there however...........

I decided to get her all fired up before I had to pick my wife up from hospital (post surgery) as per normal she couhed and spluttered (not the wife this time) and seemed to fire on 3 cylinders. Quick fault diagnosis thought it might be a fouled plug. Whipped out the plugs cleaned them put them back in and hey presto........you've guessed it she didn't fire up!

long story short checked all the wiring - engine turns overs but thats it.

I would of probably still been there now but for that fact that the flu bug is flying around the Air Base (yes I know Ian Lawson its about the only thing that does fly in the Kiwi Air Force!) and I got called in to work the night shift!

So as you can guess the WIFE is not Happy because I'm at work, I'm NOT HAPPY because I'm at WORK and the car is not Happy!

So all in all any ideas how I solve the starting problem.........the rest I can figure out after 23 years of marriage and the same amount of time in the Service.

Oh yeah by the way the whhels look great .........damn shame I can't drive round the streets showing them off!

Look forward to your replies

G'Day,
was the ignition coil, just gave up the ghost. Check the supply terminals are tight and a wire has not broken off. The trickiest to find are those that fatigue the inner conductor without breaking the insulation. Is yours EFI? There is an extra wire on the coil that caught me out when I put in my own design electronic ignition a fair while back.

I have not driven any of my fiats after March 2nd. We are in the grips of a record heatwave here in Adelaide.

And my new job sucks but more so in the heat!

I'd check for fuel delivery and spark. I don't know a darn thing about an X19 but on most cars, you need both of these. However, I've found the X to be a different bird. Check the right front parking lamp. Maybe that's the problem...is it too early for a beer?

... that YOU messed with!

You probably did indeed bump off a coil primary wire or another critical one.  They fall off quite easily around that area.

Do as Denise suggested though, and divide and conquer.  Squirt some fuel down its throat and try again.  If it coughs, then ya got spark and its a fuel issue, look at THAT wiring, if it doesn't then I'd suspect a spark issue, and go in that direction.

(I haveta wonder though... at usually less than 2 bucks apiece, why would you clean and reinstall a plug?  I suggest Bosch Platinums WR7DP(X)s for an economical yet very effective UPGRADE.)

Sorry to hear of your trouble... keep in touch...

I had a similar issue with my 78 X recently, it turned out to be the points, the contacts were a bit fouled and not working, so no spark. I filed them back a little and it fired right up again. Cheers, Terry
