Jim and Alan arrived at my place last night in the 500 and after a night of booze and chat and more booze and more chat at the local watering hole, they are now back enroute to Dublin with the 500 remaining here in SoCal.

Again, please mark 8/3, next Sunday, to gather at my place for a viewing of this car. It will also be at Car Night at Merkel's this Thursday (7/31). BTW, anyone here going to that show (JJ? Ed?), I need a ride to there from Pasadena.

Here's a few pics. More details on next Sunday to follow, just save the date for now.

Edit: Couple of quick stats: 46mpg pushing it hard in traffic and 64+ mpg on the open freeway, nothing but a straight-up 1.2 under the hood, non-hybrid and cleaner than a Prius!

Sorry I can't be at the car night get together at Merkel's. Please wish him well. I miss seeing him. (He taught at Art Center when I was there and was my mentor regarding rear engine Fiats.)

How long do you get to keep the beast?

Thanks , love the pics, 46 city ,64+ highway, that is amazing, how do they do it? It seems to be about the same size as a Mini and they get no where near that gas mileage??

64 Hwy./46 City......Amazing!
The 500 alone would cement Fiat's sucessful return to the US. They couldn't make enough of them.
They have to be seriously thinking of a return, why wouldn't they!?!?

I'd love the chance to get up close and take one for a spin, too bad I'm so far away, you'll have to gun the engine a couple times for me!

The 500 he chose to bring over has a 1200cc engine and likely not too many options. Minis are tuned for American acceleration perceptions, and are intended to be sporty not econo cars.

Personally I would be very happy with the 1.2l but hardly anyone would likely buy it in the US either as a perception issue or due to the fact that you have to rev the whee out of it which most Americans are afraid to do (it might hurt the engine ).

Unfortunately our tastes are not those of the rest of the buying public. I also suspect that as gas drops below 4 bucks the interest in economical cars will drop in the US.

Tony,
Like I said in my last emali to you, we'll be out of town until that Sunday, August 3rd. I would, however like to make it back in time to get over to Rudy's to see the "500". He said that the event at his place would be in the late afternoon and early evening. I would be proud to pick you up and take you back to Pasadena on that Sunday since we will be returning home to Diamond Bar via the 210 around one o'clock p.m. in the Chrysler: There will be plenty of room for you in the car. However, you would have to share the back seat with Sofie on the way to Diamond Bar (about a 20 min. drive). From there you and I will change to the X1/9 and leave for Rudy's. Let me know if this arrangement is satisfactory with you. If you have any more details on this event please share them with me.
Thanks,
ED

EDITORIAL CORRECTION: I now realize that the request for transport came from Rudy and not Tony and the request was for transport to/from Merkel's on Thursday (7/31) and not for Sunday 8/3. Unfortunately, I will unable to assist either of you fine gentlemen, however, I do plan to attend the August 3rd's event if you'll have me.
Regrets,
ED
