FI problem resolved

But I can't take credit for it. In all the years I've owned Fiats, this is the first time I've taken one to an outside source for repair....but I'm so thankful to have found an authentic Fiat mechanic that didn't cringe when I told him what kind of car I had!
He found the clamps to the intake hose rusted and loose and a split hose at the head. Repaired that and set the idle, then test drove it. It has a bearing or wrist pin noise and advised me not to dog the car but at least the FI is in proper working order now and I'll be able to rebuild the extra 1500 knowing I can swap the FI with no inherent problems
He's my hero!

Geez, one of us mighta had a chance to be your hero too!

So... this wrist pin or bearing noise... what's that about. Kinda an unusual problem as the bottoms of these mills are generally quite robust. I can't remember anyone in the last 7 years or so posting such a complaint.

Did have one EXPLODE ans one SIEZE... but nev'r a complaint up until that point! HA!

Have you or yours or the hero been able to somewhat locate the issue to one or more cylinders?

Also... one possible PLUS... I THOUGHT I had some kinda wrist pin noise once... proved to be th upper end.. and what it was, was... PINGING!

Now... I know that sounds strange, but so does pinging in these engines. I mean, if it is, its OK to feel kinda stupid about it but NOT have a serious problem, right? And being FOOLED by one of these cars is NO disgrace...

Do check the advance and see if its within specs (10 degrees I think) just for giggles. I set mine at 10 degrees on a carbed 1500 with crappy 87 octane and all sorts of noise occurred. That's when I first learned about the weird pinging noise! Turned it back to 7 degrees (stock is 5) and run premium (91!!!) fuel now...

Have fun!

I had two problems: One is I couldn't get it to idle down without it surging and second, I found the air filter missing but when I installed one it ran too rich and fouled the plugs. Everyone tried to help by referring me to the diagnostic threads but I'm mechanically challenged and unless I'm walked through diagnostics I'm lost. I really am a dumb blonde...don't let anyone tell you differently!
As far as the bearing/wrist pin rattle, it may be worn out with 150k but I'll make sure the timing is correct and see if I can pinpoint the noise.

Check on something. Are either of the pulleys, on the cam or on the auxiliary shaft the plastic type? As those get old and cracked they tend to rattle very much like a diesel or perhaps a wrist pin.

Try this though for future use... I have trouble reading for understanding off the screen, maybe its because I began life with books... Anyway. I downloaded the FI guide and then printed it out. I was then able to see the pattern in its layout and it became very simple to understand and follow. Only two "electric" tools are needed ... and they can be learned quite easily also.

As for 150K... I'm doing 164K on Black Tooth and the head has never been off... and I haven't always been nice to him.

Looks like Mr. Plaia tends to agree with me also... don't tear it down until you really prove the problem to be internal.

BTW... did your hero perform a wet and dry compression test for ya? Hopefully he did and can provide you with the results. A bearing or wrist pin going south would not necessary affect compression, but usually those issues occur do to a lack of oil or a heat problem, and poor compression would/could result also. It would just better confirm you would need to tear the mill down... or not.

Hey Mark and Tony. Thanks for the replies. I'll check the noise out closer once I get the Spider's front suspension back on and can pull the car in the shop. I'm sure the guy could've spent a lot of time on the X diagnosing various problems with it but our deal was he would spend an hour to see if he could diagnose the FI problem. I'm not only an extreme penny pincher but it was also meant to be a test to see if he'd be a good and reliable mechanic. I'm not an untrusting soul, but I've been in the car service business for 20 years and I know people, especially females can be taken advantage of. I'm not ready to sink a lot of money in the car just yet since it's third on the list of Fiats to work on. I've still got to rejet and retune the dual Webers on the 71 and pull the 72 in for stripping.
Ron and I did do a leakdown on the cylinders and found #1 at 40%. The other cylinders were good. This car needs so much TLC and I'd rather wait in case the engine does need to come out for when I'm ready to do the bodywork.

Here's a big warning for ya Denise... It probably would be BEST if ya do get the Spider running and ready to sell first, 'cause once you do get the X to where ya want it, the Spider will be abandoned... Such a shame...

HA!

Do... Do yurself a favor and try the ATF trick on the FI car... then retest the all the cylinders... I betcha a donut it brings it back!

And yur welcome, BTW...

I'm afraid that won't happen!
As far as the atf, do you just pour it in the oil? How much and for how long? I can't hurt it any worse than it is now. I was also going to steam clean the Spider by squirting a mist of water in each carb hole. the last engine I took apart was carboned up pretty good.
