128 Strut Part #, maybe x1/9 struts?

128 Strut Part #, maybe x1/9 struts?

Hi All,

Just bought a 128 and there are a couple of extra struts in the trunk. The seller said they might be 74 x 1/9 rear struts.

Can anyone cross reference a monroe strut number? The number is MW720 8E83 or
Box Number SHPR S1579

There is a also a Boge box with the number ? 190 3

The first digit was missing.

If anyone can help that would be great!

Good Idea about the fotos. See below. The monroe shock is about a foot shorter, all in the piston length. Anyone have x1/9 rear struts handy to measure?

the 'heftier' one looks like a Bilstein shock to me. They are different in that the 'body' of the shock (where the oil is) is 'upside-down' and is pressurized. Inside of the lower 'main tube' is the smaller diameter shaft, attached to the very bottom of the main housing. The larger diameter of the body/shaft is supposed to be stiffer and since the bearing surface is no longer the seal, is is supposed to last longer as well. You do want to lube the shafts on occcasion, you can see the 'wear' on the tubes by the discoloration.

I had a set of these on my BMW 535is for over 200k and one finally let go. I thought they were great shocks.

Your text said 1 FOOT shorter, not 1 INCH... that's why I asked for clarification.

The one on the left does appear to be the correct strut... see the other response for the "hefty one"...

Both may indeed fit.

I dunno how good or bad these are... but Summit was selling new ones for 59 bucks apiece and ya can't beat that...

The only other thing I would suggest is to compare it to what's on the car... Remove one if necessary...&nbsp; Tips on doing that if you need them.

I just measured a NOS 1974-78 X1/9 rear strut, an OEM part made by Wayassauto. The stamping on the side reads:

WAYASSAUTO - MADE IN ITALY - 909 27 1425 - POST. 128 BS OC.1 - FIAT 4290389

The total overall length is 21", & the length from flat part of spring perch up to the end of the strut is 11". Measurements were made with strut rod fully extended, as in your photo.

It would appear that the struts you have are for the front of a Fiat 128, not the rear of an X1/9.
