ive been doing some black bears out of wet jack pine they crack alittle in the sun since they get so hot what can i do i just paint the cracks over again any tips

oil, oil, oil.

All wood is going to crack as it loses it's moisture. Larger carvings you put a cut down the back to relieve the stress as this happens. Also, the slower wood dries the better. When we oil the wood we are replacing the moisture the wood is losing to prevent the shrinkage of the wood. The wood will still crack just not as badly.

I painted my first bears black like you are doing now and I found that made it worse. The paint isn't oil based and the black brings on the heat allot more dramatically. Now I burn them and spar varnish them.
