Interesting how Canada's been doing since Her Harper's crypto-fascists took over.

Just saying.

Pretty consistent trend for China. LOL.

Seriously, once China reaches the top, it will remain that way for the rest of human history since there are simply no more competent (non-black European/East Asian) nations with the population to ever overtake her.

China might be overtaken in population but those nations are black and won't ever reach the required per capita income to get past China economically.

The thing about China is, should the West ever collapse economically, China will be economically prosperous domestically, not globally, since the nations it exports to will no longer need cheap plastic trinkets. That's not to say they won't continue to somewhat prosper, just not on a global scale, and only for as long as foreign natural resources keep flowing in, which I imagine won't be for much longer since nations will want to consolidate their own resources for the survival of their nations..

bigfatpandabear

dont count your chickens until the eggs hatch.

you dont give the old rich white men enough credit. they were the ones that created EVERYTHING around you in this modern world so dont think there gonna pass the crown so easily. they collapsed the soviet union in less then 2 generations, lets see how long it takes to do the same to the chinese.

But one thing be said what we are witnessing is one of the most unprecedent event in histroy, no nation in histroy in a span of 30 years took so many millions of people out poverty like china.Even using brutality still one amazing feat i must say.

No!

China's economy should be far bigger than India in 1980.
In 1980, china's grain production was more than 300 million tons a year for 900 million people, India's record is less than 150 million for 1.2 billion people
in 1980, China's steel production was more than 37 million tons. India reached that in early 21 century.
in 1980, China was a country that has N bombs, H bombs, Missiles, N-sums
in 1980, Chinese life expectancy was 65 years old, India reached that in recent years
in 1980, China's literacy rate was 80%, India's is still lower than that today. Don't forget India counts a people who can write and read his own name literate.

@QQ

I think India is pretty consistent. in 1982, India was the 10th largest economy in the world. now in 2012, they still are the 10th.
Can't blame it too much.

The Chinese could not take India out of their minds even when no Indian commented in this thread ?

\\china rocks. india sucks at 1980s. india GDP even larger then china. and now china is more then 4 times of india. that's so funy......\\

If you take a long term view, India and China oscillated between largest and second largest economies for much of the millenium. Sometimes India would be on top.Sometimes China. You are right, India had larger economy and percapita income than China in early 80s.Now its reverse and full credit to the chinese. China's growth is top down and govt driven. India's growth is private sector driven with minimal initiative from govt. If only Indian govt can learn from chinese govt about economic management (avoiding their political mistakes).

\\I think India is pretty consistent. in 1982, India was the 10th largest economy in the world. now in 2012, they still are the 10th.\\

Thats true for nominal GDP but not true for PPP.

\\The Chinese could not take India out of their minds even when no Indian commented in this thread ?

China and India are the largest developing countries in the world, with similar population size, time to achieved independence, and similar starting point after that (poor/ruined by wars). It is quite fair to compare two nations in terms of society development, GDP, education, science/technology development, sports, healthcare, military etc. Honestly, in China, people and media seldom mention India and news related to India/Indian is quite rare as well. From government, private companies to individuals, people like to compare and learn from real rich/developed country like US. You don't have too much interest in a nation with income level of 1/3 of yours. This is not to inflame but plain fact. I believe you can understand that.

\\If you take a long term view, India and China oscillated between largest and second largest economies for much of the millenium. Sometimes India would be \\on top.Sometimes China. You are right,

mind to provide the link that India used to be the largest economy? China used to the largest economy and probably will back to top in 1-2 decades again. It rises many times in history and well documented like what we see it nowaday. But didn't know India has similar history (forgive me). does any western history books document anything about it?

\\Thats true for nominal GDP but not true for PPP.
PPP is a joke honestly. Even back to 2001, China's PPP was the 2nd largest nation, but honestly, nobody in China (probably also in the rest of world) really cares it. Its only purpose is to make you happy when you really don't have money.

One one hand the chinese member think its fair to compare both countries because of certain similarities and on the other hand he says Chinese dont care about India and dont compare. If Chinese in China dont compare with India, then why do Chinese in WAFF want to compare with India ? I see a contradiction here ! Not that i have any problem with this comparision personally but there are some WAFF chinese who might feel offended !

Are you by any chance new to this forum ? If yes, Welcome ! This topic (whether India or China were largest economy of the world for longest period of time) is discussed to death in this forum and there were lot of flamewars between Indians and Chinese on this topic. To cut the story short and answer your question, yes there are western attestations to the fact that India exchanged places with China and osillated between largest and second largest economy of the world for much of the millinium. You can refer to studies of Angus Maddison.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

\\PPP is a joke honestly.\\

May be or May be not but thats not the point. Your statement that India is being 10th largest economy of the world since 1982 is applicable from nominal point of view, not PPP. You were being more generic. I am being more specific.

i have been predicting china will take the number 1 spot from U.S in about 8 years. if things go the way they are of course. but

fatpandabear china will not stay that way forever. it will happen as history suggests. China will eventually fall and a new nation will takeover. only thing that is not certain is how long it will take.

China has unfortunately put itself into a position where it depends on the prosperity of the nations it gets its resource imports from, and who buy their exports.

there is nothing wrong with that...I call that a virtuous cycle....We buy your resources while making stuff for you to buy...Both making money at the same time.....That's a good thing, but bad for those who could not participate in this virtuous cycle....In fact, slight bad for those that depend on selling resources for a living as their industries hollow out...

In a perfect world perhaps, but you keep predicting and wishing for the fall of the Western economy, which as I noted, would ultimately end up destroying China's economy, because for your economy to boom, you rely on Western resources. With Western nations now forced to hoard their resources as "global currency" (trust me people need oil more than the plastic stuff that comes out of China), and with China unable to wage any sort of war with the absence of those much needed resources resources, they really put themselves at the mercy of the West. One can say that we've set it up where if we fail, you fail, and it will ultimately be harder on you. [tin foil hat] Gotta love the globalists [/tin foil hat]

I only predict China will fail if the West fails. I don't predict China will fail on their own. Not unless they do something stupid and start a war.
