I'm torn between a high class aircraft, namely the F-35, and a cheap solution, namely the Gripen.

Independent Scotland

2 Squadrons SU 35s = 30 aircraft
1 Squadron SU 34s = 15 aircraft
2 Wings SU 25SMs = 10 aircraft

all aircraft using Scottish Avionics (Avionics are based in Scotland as is Radar)

and ditch/donate the 12 or 13 Eurofighters we will inherit from the UK within 5 to 10 years

Scotland contributes just under £3.5 billion per year towards UK defence budget ... i would like to See a Indy Scotland spend £5 billion per year .. i want a robust defence force for Scotland .. within the UK as it stands our maritime waters and air cover is pretty 3rd rate

I thought that you will opt for Chinese planes. But F-15E has great strike and self-defence capability.

That's sorta MoD plan anyway. F16 would be bought new - we wanted to buy like 100 of used F16 from bargin bin, but MOD was shocked how expensive used F16 were for Romania. So new approach is that new aircraft are cheaper than used ones.

funny you say that Havirov i swear Pakistan are still building the JF-17s to be the backbone of their airforce

i chose SU-35s like the SU-34 they have proven to be quite capable aircraft and the SU-25s are ideal for ground support .. all 3 types of aircraft are reasonably priced ... the biggest threat to Scotland's security has always came from the south

Flanders is very wealthy ... If we didn't had to pay between 9 and 18 billion USD every year to the Walloons we'd be golden ^^
Anyway, the F-35 is great and is, realistically speaking, the only future proof aircraft for our air force. However if we can only buy 30 or so that's not enough. We'll never start a war on our own for the simple reason we can't win against anyone except Luxembourg, so if we do go to war it will be in a coalition. We'll only have a marginal contribution. The Gripen is not great but if it's only used as a bomb truck when air dominance has been achieved it will suffice.

It´s for poorer countries, btw Gripen E/F will have greater capability. We are small poorer NATO country and our traitor politicians don´t care on properly defence budget (only 1% GDP).

^^^ Gripen has done pretty well vs F16's in training exercises. They are a short range light fighter, but they are very maneuverable. For a defending aircraft I think they would be a pretty good choice for a small country.

I think the Gripen E/F is a failure, the aircraft is late and overweight ... and will thus be costly. That's just not acceptable for a light aircraft.

*******I thought that you will opt for Chinese planes. But F-15E has great strike and self-defence capability.**********

RE: I thought this was just a hypothetical discussion

the 200 F-15E was based on a research paper i read some time back... i cant remember where... but that this is kind of plane and number PAF needs to neutralise IAF 1000+ fleet of Su-30, mig 29s etc

PAF is one of the few airforces that can maintain F-15E's complex maint. requirements. with off set being high performance. PAF has plenty of first rate pilots that can effectlvely use the eagle...

in the real world fifth generation Chinese Planes and JF-17 will become the planes of PAF.. the current F-16s are just stop gaps.

RE: Chinese planes are improving their tech and quality each year.. no body is saying they are crap. JF-17 has only one accident that due to low level flying error by the pilot.. plus export orders .. hardly crap.

besides USAF get all the gear because they buy things with money they dont really have.. tell us how much debt USA has?
