The New York Times and other publications report that $52 million of WTC Liberty Bonds will help pay for a new home for the Heisman Trophy at the National Sports Museum on Broadway at Bowling Green.
The 100,000-square foot museum at 25 Broadway in the former Cunard Passenger Ship Line building is scheduled to be completed in November 2006. The building is characterized by a behive roof and is across the street from the WTC Sphere. It is also next to several downtown museums.
The Heisman Trophy was first awarded in 1935 by the Downtown Athletic Club at 19 West Street. That 35-story building is being converted to condominiums. The trophy was named in 1936 for the clubs athletic director, John Heisman, a longtime college football coach.
The trophy was moved around NYC hotels after the building closed following the 911 attacks.
