Snow has closed two passes east of Mount Rainier, and at least one is likely to remain closed until spring, state Transportation Department officials said.
Following the first significant snowfall of the season in the Cascades, 5,430-foot Chinook Pass on Washington 410 and 4,675-foot Cayuse Pass at the junction of Washington 123 and 410, were closed Monday.
The two passes, about five miles apart, are usually closed for the season in mid-November to mid-December and are reopened in April or May, sometimes as late as June.
As of early Tuesday both closures were listed as temporary rather than for the season on the state Transportation Department's Web site. All other passes were open.
With more snow in the forecast, Chinook Pass probably will not be reopened until the spring melt, said Don Wherry, a state highway maintenance supervisor.
