MAMMOTH LAKES, CA - Two miles high in the Eastern Sierra, a volcanic hotspot swallowed the record 21-foot snowpack, claimed two of California's most experienced ski experts who fell into its maw, and then took the life of a colleague who tried to save them.

The deaths came on April 6 despite a series of heroic rescue efforts on <a href=http://www.mammothmountain.com/>Mammoth Mountain</a>, one of the state's premier winter resorts, authorities said.

The tragedy unfolded in a fumarole, a crevasse that emits gases from deep within the mountain, set in a huge volcanically active basin.

Two ski patrol members had taken off their skis and were shoveling out the record snows that had obscured the 4-foot-high safety fence around the known hazard when the snow, apparently weakened by heat from below, gave way.

James Juarez, 35, a five-year veteran of the Mammoth Mountain ski patrol originally from Granada Hills, and John "Scott" McAndrews, 37, a Mammoth Mountain ski patroller from Bishop, fell to the bottom of the pit. They were engulfed in fumes, which elsewhere on the mountain emit a sickening sulfurous odor.

MAMMOTH LAKES, CA - An avalanche struck a <a href=http://www.mammothmountain.com>Mammoth Mountain</a> ski run Monday but no one was found in the snow after hours of searching and no one was reported missing, a resort spokeswoman said.

Hundreds of searchers worked across the avalanche area using poles to probe the snow every six inches, and with no missing person reports, the situation was to be re-evaluated following a sweep with avalanche dogs, said Joani Lynch, spokeswoman for the popular Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.

"We fielded a number of calls from concerned individuals looking for people and it turns out that the individuals who were not accounted for were helping with the search," Lynch said.

PALM SPRINGS - A Dallas couple lost for 2 ½ days near the <a href=http://www.pstramway.com>Palm Springs Aerial Tramway</a> stumbled across the campsite of a hiker who vanished more than a year ago, relying on supplies from the missing man's backpack to survive.

On Tuesday, Brandon Day, 28, and 24-year-old Gina Allen thanked not just their rescuers but also <a href=http://www.network54.com/Forum/3897/mes ... ornia>John Donovan</a>, of Virginia, a 60-year-old hiker who disappeared in the snowy San Jacinto Mountains in early May 2005. Provisions from Donovan's backpack provided the couple with food, heavy clothes and matches that they used to make a signal fire that alerted rescuers to their location.

"I want to thank him for helping save our lives," Day said at a news conference Tuesday.

Authorities found paperwork in the backpack showing it belonged to Donovan, who remains missing. <a href=http://www.riversidesheriff.org>Riverside County sheriff</a>'s Sgt. Earl Quinata said searches are planned for this week.

Chris Hook, Donovan's longtime friend, was overjoyed at the news Tuesday and was hopeful that the discovery would soon lead to the recovery of the retired social worker's remains.
