"REFLECTING AN ABSENCE OF COST CONTROL"

January 23, 2004 -- $350 million ("Price Tag of Sorrow — Cost of WTC Memorial Will Top $350M," Jan. 15). Incredible. The proponents of this absurd, outrageously expensive memorial design have proven that its main purpose is their own aggrandizement.
Clearly, honoring the victims is an afterthought.

With $350 million, the state and city could pay tuition, room, board and fees for four years for more than 5,000 children of World Trade Center victims at a state university and still have $50 million left over for a tasteful, meaningful memorial.

The modest and deeply moving Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. — which honors 58,235 — was built for $8.4 million in 1982.

There appears to be a significant rate of inflation for "closure."
