Jerry Brekhus in the county highpointers has posted the following list of highest paved roads in the U.S.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/cohp/

Here's a combined list of paved roads for the 50 states.

Besides merging the two previous lists, there are a couple of corrections.
Dave Covill reminded me that the road up to Taum Sauk, MO has a few miles
of gravel. Thus, it has been deleted from the list. New Mexico's entry is
now Bobcat Pass, the actual pass that NM 38 crosses. It is a few dozen feet
lower than previously listed Red River Pass.

Table lists highest road for each state meeting these criteria:
1. Elevation is reachable driving only on pavement.
2. Legally accessible to public. (Toll may be required.)
3. Road must normally be open in summer, but may be closed in winter.

In general roads listed are through roads, continuously paved. However, if
two roads are listed for a state, the higher road has no paved outlet.

OK, let's run through that again. If only ONE road is shown for a state, it
is a through highway, which happens to be the highest elevation you can
drive to all on paved roads for that state. If TWO roads are listed, the
first is the highest of all, but it is an out-and-back drive. The second is
the highest paved THROUGH road.

I'd better wrap this up so I get it sent before 11 pm local time. ;<) BTW,
I used to live in Rochester, MN, home of the MAYO Clinic.

Alaska's highest paved road is the Denali Highway, not the Glenn Highway's Eureka Summit.

There are two places where the Denali Highway's paved portion east of the Tangle River ascends across a 3,700-foot contour. With 100-foot contour intervals, I would place the best guess at the highest elevation of a paved road at 3,750 feet.

The Denali Highway is a through highway, but it is not paved for its entirety. I'm not sure how you'd denote that on your list.

There are also plans afoot to pave the portion of the Dalton Highway where it crosses Atigun Pass at 4,850 feet. I don't know if those plans were able to come to fruition this past field season.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road goes to the parking lot at the top. This is perhaps 20' below the actual summit. Thus this entry should be 6268', not 4400' as listed.

Does anyone have a better number for the distance the parking lot lies below the summit? Mohamed?

The Washburn map show the upper parking lot between the 6,200 and 6,250 contours. But note that the summit stages go up to the level of the vistor center, which I would guess is less than ten feet lower than the summit.

A look at the (metric) topozone map suggests that the summit buildings are somewhere between 1908 and 1914 meters, interpolation would give 1911 meters, about five meters lower than the summit. On the other hand, the main building seems to be actually on the 1614 contour. The summit itself is at 1916.5 meters.

So my guess of ten feet is not too far off.

That should obviously be 1914.

Wouldn't it be nice if we could edit posted messages, as every modern bulletin board allows? Losing the archived messages would be a small price to pay for having a contemporary bulletin board.

I almost responded to this one this morning...then I seemed to recall that upper portion(s) of the auto road are actually not paved. Perhaps the 4,400' elevation is inteded to reflect where the pavement ends.

The highest portion of the road (leading up to the summit parking lot) is paved: the unpaved sections are in steeper sections further down (left unpaved, I was told by the stage driver, because the paving washed out every winter).

Looking at rules above, #1 says, "Elevation is reachable driving only on pavement." That 4,400' elevation may be at the beginning of the first unpaved stretch of the toll road.

Interesting to note that they deleted the Taum Sauk road because of a "few miles of gravel" though. I wonder if the "1,730 next to the Webster coHP" is above the highest point of continuous pavement on the Taum Sauk road.

Maybe I should just follow the link already and figure this out...

Last summer I was in AK for the Midnight Run Marathon (no, it doesn't start at midnight), and the next week I explored the state a little, going all the way up to Talkeetna in a rental. On the way back, I took the scenic route and drove on a Hatcher-Pass Rd. (between Palmer on Rt.1 & Willow Airport on Rt.3), which led to a great highland area and mountain lake in the bowl of a summit. On the way down was some alpine resort (really cool pics of the place). Anyhow, according to the Mcnally topo and my Etrex, I was over 3900 ft, really close to 4000' up. It wasn't paved, but in really good condition, well-traveled road. I also had a flat and almost had the spare roll down the entire mountain while changing the tire (take a second to picture that in your mind; on a mtn. dirt road, above the trees, flat tire, on vacation & seeing the spare roll 10', then leaping to catch it before it went down the ENTIRE moutain.)

Subject: Highest Paved Roads

Once again, I am posting the list of highest paved roads. Each posting tends to generate a few more corrections, which are welcome. The list may appear in Apex to Zenith, so here is your chance to help me get it right.

These are all paved roads, to the best of our knowledge. As before, if there are two roads listed for a state, the first, higher one is a cul-de-sac. The rest are through roads.

States with changes since last time include Arkansas, California, and West Virginia. Thanks to Dave Olson, Pete Yamagata and Fred Johnson, and Fred Lobdell for the corrections. It looks like the Freds lead this round, but then again, Dave Olson submitted more than one. :>) --Jerry
