I was happy to see that the New York Tourism commission has adopted a slogan that I used to have on my Marcy page.

In their ad, they show a French explorer visitng the state's natural wonders (in the first ad it was Niagra Falls) and an old timer comes up and says, "It's New York, What Did You Expect?"

I pulled the slogan a few months ago as a lot of people misunderstood my point. Many people thought I was being disrespectful of Marcy and the 'daks.

To borrow another NY Tourist phrase, I Love the 'Daks.

Of course there may be no connection between the two events, but I do have my fantasies.

According to the High Peaks Region guidebook put out by the Adirondack Mountain Club, it was
first climbed by Ebenezer Emmons, Professor of Chemistry at Williams College. There is a plaque with this information on it posted just below the summit.

i went up the day after Memorial Day for a few reasons.
first, no crowds...in fact i saw no one til i was above treeline and then only a few.
second, i figured the long weekend crowd would pack the trail down for me. they did, but 6 inches either side of the trail will result in really deep postholing.
third, and most important....BEAT THE BLACK FLY SEASON.
