While hiking with other highpointers and county highpointers I noticed their affinity for various highpointing, prominence, etc. lists. One thing my wife and I noticed while driving to State Highpoints was how close many of the highpoints were to State lines. We started calling these "Cheater Highpoints." Quite often these highpoints were significantly lower than the highpoint of the closest neighboring state. If the state line was moved just a few miles or less they would not be highpoints. Here is a list of the 15 Cheater Highpoints:

I think the Delaware highpoint's (Ebright Azimuth or Tower Hill) proximity to Pennsylvania might be more worthy of mention than Guadelupe Peak's proximity to New Mexico.

And Woodall Mountain, Mississippi - close to the borders of both Alabama and Tennessee.

I have not been to the Delaware or Mississippi highpoints yet. How many miles from the state border are they? I guess I should set a mileage limit in order for a Cheater HP to qualify. Less than 10 miles? <5 miles? What do you think?

Ebright Azimuth, Delaware, is about 100 yards south of the Pennsylvania border.

Woodall Mountain, Mississippi, is about 8 miles west of the Alabama border and 10 miles south of the Tennessee border.

You could actually turn this into a twist on how you do your highpoints - start your hike in another state, assuming the border is less than X miles away.

The list, especially for the midwestern states, shows the inexorable drop in elevation from the Rockies to the Mississippi River valley - with little variation. It's even true on smaller scales - the county HPs for many of the plains counties in CO, KS, OK, TX, eastern NM and NE are on their western boundaries, and many of them right on the northwestern corner itself.
