A curious list to say the least. There are 42 California cities listed and the sole New York entries are Buffalo and Rochester. I guess we should all move west.

no kidding!
riverside california is a good walking city?
maybe if you enjoy smelling pickup-truck exhaust fumes in 105º heat..
gee, have they ever even been to riverside?

Couldn't find Boulder (Colorado, not Utah or W. Australia). I'd expected to see it near the top.

Hey man ... you're right. UCR is pretty nice though. My favorite fume was regular unleaded from a 1988 Chevrolet half-ton. mm-mmm!

I noted Tempe AZ was number 37 then Chandler AZ like #10-something. Given that they border one another I am curious what is it about the boundary that reduces the pleasure of walking so drastically from Tempe to Chandler, or in reverse the other way.

Where's the best city for stretching? Cracking knuckles? The curious want to know.

Perhaps you missed the seventh entry on the list. It's a little place that people like to call the Big Apple. I've heard it's in New York, too.

One of the interesting things on the list is the correlation between a high ranking and having a commuter rail system. Hmmmm...

It took a bit of sleuthing, but I found the criteria on the AMPA web site: FAQ on the 2005 Best Walking Cities Competition. There is some more material on their Best Walking Cities Campaign page.

awesome cheeseburgers too at in and out burger and farmer brothers in riverside.

well, at least you'll be the only person walking (outside of tyler mall..)

because when i saw that the list included moreno valley, ca (where my grandparents live), i said "somethign is up." saying moreno valley is a good walking city is like saying NYC is a quaint, quiet place to live..

What criteria were used to determine a city’s walkability?

1 % Athletic Shoe Buyers
2 % Walk for Exercise
3 % Hike/Backpack
4 % Go to Beaches
5 % Dog Owners
6 % Baby Stroller Owners
7 % Go to Museums
8 % Walk-to-Work
9 % Use Public Transportation
10 Golf Index
11 Walking for Health Index
12 % Bike-to-Work
13 % Walk for Fitness
14 % Play Sports/Exercise

the problem is, they only picked 200 cities to survey, and then ranked them all according to the above criteria. so you can say these 200 cities are a cross section of the U.S. as a whole, and that the cities near the bottom actually represent the WORST walking cities in the US.

How were the cities selected? APMA selected 200 US incorporated cities with the largest populations based on US Census data. The APMA hired an independent research company, Al Fisher Associates, Inc., to calculate the cities’ rankings. The data used in this study were provided by Spatial Insights, Inc., a supplier of data on US cities compiled by Applied Geographic Solutions, Inc.
