14,508'? New Survey Data for Whitney

Looks like you can legitimately claim to have been over 14,500' in the conterminous 48 States if you've done Whitney.

This thread on the Mt. Whitney Portal Store bulletin board lists the summit as 14,508' according to recently updated calculations.

Better braggin' rights, at least!

Thanks for the link and new information, but as I understand it, this new height of 14,508' would represent an increase of three feet from the generally accepted elevation of 14,505'. I think the 14,494' figure has been outdated for some time.

Here is a NOAA data sheet that appears to have been compiled in 2006 showing a summit elevation of 14,505' obtained via satellite:

When I summited last year, I thought I was at 14,505' based on what I had read before the trip. Interesting fodder for discussion since we're talking about the highest elevation in the lower 48.
