This project was actually started last weekend after my [I Swear Too Much] and I played an Apocalypse game at our local store. He had used the 'Long Range Ack-Ack' strategic asset to [I Swear Too Much] my Vulture out of the sky and mentioned that he'd love to have a Hydra. I had recently unearthed a Basilisk that was in pretty bad shape; No Earthshaker cannon, missing one of the gun support struts, no tracks. I already own a complete Bassy battery so I felt that adding a 4th wouldn't do me any wonders and this came about.

The build is fairly early in progress so far, though these pics aren't the most recent.

The turret is on a 60mm base that has an affixed rod (the same type used for the gun barrels) so it can swivel freely. The guns are attached statically but are removable as I want to also use this as a Manticore. Anyone have any good tips on where I could [I Swear Too Much] appropriate missiles for that?

I'd say, use the rockets you get with the imperial vehicle upgrade sprue, if you have any left. Actually I saw a very good conversion at my store, it looked like a modern rocket launcher system, the guy simply used plasticard to create the missile storage, and had about 8 hinged flaps for the missiles.

If that makes any sense, congrats, your smarter then me........

I recommend you the 1/48 Hasegawa's weapon set B

http://www.1999.co.jp/eng/10000500

I remember a fellow WIP member did a Manticore conversion using them and I immediately bought a set. They look impressive enough compared to a chimera chassis.

Someone remembers that thread???

That bomb set looks awesome but the price is in yen so I bet shipping to Canada would be killer. I like the advanced shaped brown missiles for a manticore but other than those none of those work for a manticore in my opinion. I'm thinking of making my 3 hydras/manticores so the "guns" are all detachable so I can try out different stuff. As long as I'm going hand built I might as well have [Warning No Swearing] with it in my own way.

The one thing about boxed missiles is that the manticore is specific about how it only carries 4 missiles and can only fire 4 times in a game so 8 spaces would be a little odd. :P

Oh, that was just a pic I [I Swear Too Much] on Internet...

I'm sure you can [I Swear Too Much] this kit locally, it's fairly common.

On the other hand, I agree with your choice, although the Phoenix at the center (I think they are Phoenix, although I might be wrong...) are also nice :)

Heh... I can't [I Swear Too Much] any even half decent tank/bomb/troop kits without going all the way down town and then I'm not even sure if I could [I Swear Too Much] them then.

The center ones are nice but that don't feel very 40k to me. I like the incindiery missiles shown in Imperial Armour Vol. 1 the best and that have a chunkier feel for sure. I think if you [I Swear Too Much] some missiles in the right scale you could cut a chunk out of the mid-body to get a nice chunky feel.

WH40K style missiles, hmmm.

Here.

Or the Talos and Tartar missiles.

The Tartar Look close to IA incindiery missiles but still not fat enough. :P I think the biggest problem with -matching- the FW style in the manticore is in general Imperial equipment is technically "dumb." They often work on the sort of principal of using enough power to not need to be fancy, accurate or "smart." Either way of course you can go with what you want cause I believe I have read some where about bunker buster missiles needing to be slimmer so their impact velocity isn't wasted in to large a spread. It is also interesting to note how the Imperial Guard's "missiles tank" is a big clunky thing that can only load 4 missiles then needs sentinel power lifters to reload it while the Marine "missiles tank" hosts smaller "smarter" missiles and either launches a single missiles per attack (Based on there being 5 missiles per side) or it can easily reload itself. Looking at the way I built my pair of whirlwinds it seems the top hatch could open up then mechanical loading arms could lift stowed missiles out of the hold and reload it rather easily.

I have also tried to do (a lot of time ago) manticore missiles with empty gas cartridges.

I later added a road wheel to the end to give the impression of a propellant charge, as well of making it a bit longer. Rivets would be a nice addition too...

I wanted to do something similar to the German Wurfrahnen 40... big, simple and rude :D

That looks great. I might add a more conical nose section but at the moment I can't think what to use so I couldn't. :vryhppy:

I think I might just use foam and sculpt one missile then add details like the fins and all then use it to make a mold. I figure as long as I leave all any GW bits they can't sue me since it is my hand sculpt. Really though as I'm doing Traitor Guard I wouldn't put an Eagle or Aquila on them anyways. Also it would make making 3+ sets easy so I could use my three Hydra/Manticores all as Manticores for a game if I feel a need for 12 big missiles.
