I'd say this is probably the most challenging mission so far. I brought in 4 Dire Wolves (Volaris, Wolfman, Psycho, and Steel), 1 Blood Asp (Meat), 1 Timber Wolf (Xenomorph) and 1 Guardian (Ghost).
I quickly took out a pair of scouting Blood Asps with head shots and salvaged one (Claymore). I soon after took out a scouting Turkina, and salvaged it (Payback). I circled the crater to reach the turrets, where I fought 2 more Blood Asps and at least 12 Javelins. I kept the Javelins ranged, and popped each of them easily. Shortly after I battled another Turkina.
Next I jumped down into the crater to capture the turret control, and the alarm sounded. I have no idea how many Assassins rushed me, but I'm thinking it was at least 30. Scary! I managed to capture the turret control, and couple of component warehouses, allowing me to salvage another mech. I quickly jumped my mechs out of the crater, and got back close enough to the recently defeated Turkina to salvage it (Rooster). This fight was nasty. I tried to divide and conquer as much as possible, but the quick Assassins were just too fast for my slow, mostly assault mech team. Soon the full force of them was upon me, and it was all I could do to concentrate fire and pop them 1 at a time. No nice clean head shots here, and assassins exploding helped immensely due to collateral damage. I prevailed, but several of my mechs were badly damaged.
Next I snuck to the north east of the crater to capture 2 resource buildings. I decided not to call in a repair truck, even though my gauss rifles were out of ammo, and I had many repairs required. Instead of repairing, I felt that 2 additional Ace mechwarriors in the field were a better bet. So I salvaged 2 additional Blood Asps, piloted by Nuke and Venom.
The next part was really tricky, and required precise timing. There was an area with 5 repair bays just out of firing range of an Overlord dropship. I ran my 5 mechs that were most in need of repairs and ammo to the bays, and sent the rest of my mechs to cover them. Another alarm sounded and I was quickly greeted by a force of 12 Rifleman IICs!! I had my non-repairing mechs focus fire with head shots, and quickly added the mechs who required mainly ammo replenishment to the attack. Once the badly damaged mechs were no longer in critical condition, they also joined the attack. It was a desperate battle, but with 12 Ace pilots doing head shots, I took out my enemies before they could destroy any of my mechs. After this, I finally had a moment to catch my breath and do full repairs to my Lance.
From there it was mostly just a matter of mopping up the remaining infantry (elementals and gnomes), a handful of aerospotters and 1 additional Blood Asp, and of course, the Overlord. I had more resource points than I knew what to do with, so I salvaged in the remaining 2 Blood Asp chassis (Wicked and DeathFX) as well as a couple of Rifleman IIC (Gunner and Nail).
A very enjoyable victory, and 170k in well-earned C-bills! I probably would have given out the Steiner awards here… but that’s just me.
Oh, and it bears pointing out that I thought the crater itself was very cool. Another very well done map! I took a few screenshots of this mission. I'll have to figure out how to post those.
After a desperate battle against some THIRTY Assassin mechs, Ghost spends a moment in quiet contemplation scanning the battlefield. It was a desperate battle and hard won victory, and yet, there is little rejoicing in the face of so much death. When will the fighting end? Will we lose our souls before it does? Have we lost them already…?
