When you go by and to the bible for answers - the source, applied by you, for the God you believe in - you are confronted with too many dicrepancies; too many contradictions.
So, in order to maintain your cherished beliefs, you have to bypass those discrepancies and contradictions. This usually amounts to 'pick and choose' (trying to have a cake and eat it too), in effect creating one's own version of an already established belief system (including dos and don'ts, musts and musn'ts) one chooses to adhere to, somehow, some way.
Resistance to evidence which exposes or threatens a person's philosophy is well known to behavioural science. We do not give up 'our' convictions easily - we fear to have them challenged. We find it very difficult to accept evidence when it is opposed to 'our' basic beliefs.
This process is quite extensively documented by behavioural science, it's called Cognitive Dissonance.

- I typed 'our' because that what we like to call "our" in this respect is actually someone else's we have adapted as "ours".
-rejected and denied by many, accepted and embraced by few : incontrovertibility
it is not what we (think we) know that matters, it is what we can show true that does
after all, truth is demonstrably fact and fact is demonstrably true - everything else ... mere conjecture-
New!! Improved!! Now With CD-Formula!!
CD: short for incontrovertible
