half of it.

World renowned atheist, Professor Richard Dawkins is on a panel of Q&A, a panel based entertainment television show tonight that poses issues to visitors. Richard is in australia this week for the global atheist convention, where speakers discuss the evils of religion and other superstition.

Our most outspoken authoritarian christian in australia is Cardinal Pell who is top witchdoctor of the Catholic church at present.

He wont pull his punches either, and he robs Dawkins of some of his most cutting material by not being a creationist, but never the less also will be capable of stating his view... I think.

It'll be on youtube before you know it, so stay tuned.

http://www.abc.net.au/tv/qanda/ looks like the official site.

Anyway, we'll probably see who is the most Nucclike by who supports the magic or the scientific view afterwards I imagine.

Is it a date? I suspect you might be a little more attached to ignorance than you might like to admit.

TWO housewives hurling insults at each other across their back fence prompted one of the great puns from Anglican wit Sydney Smith. ''Those two will never agree,'' he said. ''They are arguing from different premises.''
The same obstacle of logic means that the world's most famous atheist and Australia's most famous clergyman are unlikely to agree on much when they lock horns tonight on ABC TV's Q&A - but the exchanges might be entertaining.
Ardent atheist Richard Dawkins, in Australia for this week's Global Atheist Convention in Melbourne, takes on the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal George Pell, separated by journalist Tony Jones, who is himself capable of an acerbic rejoinder.

''This is a remarkable match-up - a title fight of belief,'' Jones said before the debate, featuring just the two guests.
The tone adopted by some atheists came under fire yesterday, when the Bible Society Australia chief Greg Clarke urged educators to stand against directions from Dr Dawkins to ridicule those with whom they disagree.

Zombie Jesus who sort of came back from the dead...

Away in a graveyard, a stone overhead
The zombie lord Jesus is raised from the dead
The bones and the corpses are at his command
And rise like their master to swarm o'er the land!
The women are screaming, then running away
Poor Mary and Martha are gnawed where they lay
I fear thee, lord Jesus, your curséd undeath
With worms in your bowels and rot on your breath.
Have mercy, lord Jesus, don't eat me today
Next year I'll be bigger, I promise! I pray
Some shaman or rabbi or priestess or such
Will stake you and save us from your deadly touch.

Is anyone going to change their minds?

Although, I admit there is some entertainment value. I did enjoy Lane versus Ehrmann.

What's the point of any type of debate?

People of rational bent will have their understandings of the power of logic and science to find the truth validated, and people of irrational, superstitious, and filled with the "infallibility of doctrine" obtained by reading an ancient goat herder books will also find their faith reinforced, everyone wins.

Some people get cranky though if they hear their superstitions questioned (Bob, its starting to sound like you?), but its OK, they cant go and burn questioners any more, the dark ages practices of imprisoning scientists for demonstrating the truth is frowned upon.

In a battle of knowledge vs ignorance, you'd think the stronger argument would win, wouldnt you? Some people will hear things for the first time, and if nothing else, seeing two people who wont take no for an answer should be entertaining.

Who's Lane again?

only from the superstitious and ignorant side.

There are some who worked hard to discover the facts, and then there are those who just said "damn, its too hard", and guessed the answer.

They made it look good by calling it faith. They insult the concept of faith by such raw cheating.

It occurs to me that the whole concept of god is nothing but a cheat.

God made everything, but who made god?

duhh.

The answer poses more questions than the question did. everyone knows it, some people just accept that that they have no idea and consign the answer to "Its unknowable so I'll pick the answer that makes me feel good about it". Not good enough.

Yes only from thge ignorant superstitious side. Not really: from the side it's a stupid argument and there are no winners - especially from people like you.

But whod really want to see things from the ignorant, superstitious side anyway?

We all know the Moslems are superstitious and ignorant, they believe in the moon god.

Of course, most Christians are working the same way.

Isnt it great how our gods are so good at spotting ignorance in others, but hang on, their gods are just as good at it too.

They also take poorly to those doubting that their gods are good and great.

They get angry and surly.

Wheres the difference?

(apart from we are right because we believe rightly)

He has churchanity banged up to rights, imo.

I read his God Delusion book, have a couple of his books and videos. The video Root of all evil and The enemies of reason makes some valid points and observations.

The only BIG problem I see with Dickie is that when he speaks of God, it is really only a god which is the product of the bible.

Many see this god as a lil ole pyscho thing anyway. YET it is this god that the big religions worship, so fair game. Let them defend their god against all elements.

But The Source is not this god or any of the representative gods or goddesses for me.

The Source is a primal Cause of some sort, some Unknowable Sort by most. Just guessed at by a few.

So personally Dickie can rant on with whoever and probably make a sense or two over the biblical god.

Not touching The Source though...

Bertrand Russell says it like Dickie when he said: 'I say quite deliberately that the Christian religion, as organized in its churches, has been and still is the principal enemy of moral progress in the world.'

Christopher Hitchens is another Dickie type:
"Gullibility and credulity are considered undesirable qualities in every department of human life -- except religion"

personally I agree.

BUT again the god/s that go with these religions should not, imo, be confused with any Source. I believe this Source is Spirit and Science and as yet, Unknowable...

What's the point? It's about as useful as the Linux/Windows "debates". Nobody ever learns anything new ... there are no revelations that come out of the exercise (as there would be in a REAL debate) ... both sides are simply bent on holding their own ground and scoring points ... so where's the value in holding these engagements?

I've never seen "Dickie" address anything in the paranormal realm ... ufo's ... psychic phenomenon etc. Does he claim that this stuff doesn't exist .... or does he simply refuse to "go there"? I think it's the latter ... he refuses to talk about this "other stuff" that doesn't fall under the Christian church umbrella.

So ...

He's just as shallow in his position as the church cardinal .... IMO.
