What about this seasons form players? Any gambles a la Duckett last year from div 2? Are any of the lions and ODI picks realistic candidates for the test team like Livingston?
Are Robson, Compton, Lyth, Ballance and Vince written off as tried and failed?
Will they persevere with Buttler as a test batsman? I sincerely hope not.
On form it's hard to see who would be ahead of Ballance.

The balance of the side is an issue here. Do the three all-rounders, Bairstow, Stokes, Ali, bat at 6-8, in my view a place too low. If they do, there is a place for another batsman at 5, and GB would be my choice. If not, there is room for an extra bowler, but is there any need, unless it was for a second spinner (please God no, I'd rather lose Balance than Rashid)? My own solution would be to play a wicket-keeper. Its possible Lyth, Lees, Ballance and Hanscomb will play all three.
Leaning may play all three and I'd be amazed if he doesn't play v Middlesex and Surrey, other than to make way for Root (v Surrey). Rhodes may get the nod at Scarborough if Leaning continues to struggle.
Is Brook ready? Maybe, but I'd be very surprised if he features in the games under discussion here bar Ballance being selected for the test squad and injury to one of the others including Rhodes.

Just a thought re Gary Ballance's colour-blindness. If he actually does have problems with the pink ball would England really want him when they have day/night Tests in August and November? Surely they won't want to slot someone in and out again for one Test in each series, particularly Ashes? Will be interesting to see what happens in the Surrey game.
