No surprise that Ballance has gone, replaced by Duckett at 4 and Hameed making his debut as yet another opening partner for Cook
No place for Buttler either

The sensible and logical decision on all counts.

Duckett probably better at 4 than opening, Hameed looks a vg prospect and should have been opening in Bangladesh, Ballance is at the moment a "walking wicket" and Buttler is not the answer as his replacement.

Hard to disagree but can Ballance now find some winter practice that will be of use to us on a cloudy damp day in England in April rather than a Bunsen burner in India

If anyone in the England setup had bothered to watch the last afternoon of our final match at Lords they wouldn't have taken poor Ballance in the first place. Hameed would have then been able to make his debut in Bangladesh rather than in India

Good luck to young Hameed, hope he goes well, but think they have given him a raw deal by not starting him in Bangladesh. Surely a couple of tests against them would have been ideal preparation.

Re ballance, I can't understand why they haven't made an amendement to the squad after the 2nd test and replaced him with another batter. He looks to me like someone who needs a couple of months away from cricket, as he is over thinking things, - a fresh start is needed, not hanging around India for a month or even worse having to play later iin the series if someone got injured.

Surprised to see that Ansari got the nod over Batty. Not the most stunning selection surprise of the day but I hope it turns out to be a good move.

Decent start on the batting side, especially Root, maybe we have been a little too gloomy about England's chances.

Thank goodness for something to celebrate after the US elections & waking up to wet snow on the ground & it's still sleeting.
Well played MoJO, I guess it's working again.

Haven't been able to watch any of it so the only comment I can make is decent first day, well done Joe and Moeen. It must be the most used cliché on this forum but you really can't say too much until they've batted.

Hoping for a big score from Bairstow sometime tomorrow to see us over 500.

Just watched the highlights, really good days play on a decent wicket. Local expert reckons it will begin to break up towards the end of the second day so winning the toss might mean winning the match.

Not a very big crowd considering how much the Indians like their cricket but very impressed with the stadium, at least on telly. Only cost 14 million dollars U.S. I read somewhere, bargain.
