...and so as another season finishes we have the Ashes to look forward to.

Michael Vaughan said the other day that we have no chance without Stokes.

Is he right?

We have the better batsman and the 2 best bowlers.

Will Vince or Ballance shine and cement their place in the team for years to come?

what say you?

Australia aren't the force as they were. I believe that we have a very good chance. I predict 3-1.

Too close to call in my opinion but Stokes would give us the edge.

Might do Stokes the world of good if we do win it. Preferably with one or two stepping up to fill his shoes effectively. Go Mo!

Would say with Ben Stokes I would make Australia favourites, without him I would make Australia big favourites.
England seem to specialise in wheels coming off on Ashes tours but this time we are not even out of the country yet.
If we England lose the series 2-1 and its been competitive and close then I wouldn't have too much a go at them.

I think some of their pundits have forgotten how ordinary their batting is. Arguably as bad or even worse than ours. They have Smith and Warner. We have Root, Bairstow and a pretty reliable lower order.

I do think, however, that their bowling attack is potentially far more dangerous than ours if they can all get fit to play. Cummins, Starc, Hazelwood, Pattinson... that is a fair old stock of quick bowlers to be fair.

We don't have to win the Ashes - we already hold them. If you mean can we retain them, I think we can.

Surprising amount of confidence on here. Personally I think there's a reason the bookies have Australia as 4/7 favourites with England out at 3/1.

Batting: there will be three world class batsmen on show, with two in the home side. Root is arguably the best all-round batsmen bit Smith has a formidable record too and may just have the edge in home conditions. Warner has added consistency to his game and is some way ahead of any other English batsmen. Cook is not quite the player he was and while Bairstow, Stokes (if available) and Moeen have their moments they are not quite at that level. Handscomb and Renshaw may not have much experience at Test level but they have shown more than whatever combination of batsmen England have at 2, 3 and 5.

Bowling: Anderson and Broad have the best career records but are not as young as they once were; will their experience and accuracy match the pace, hunger and wicket-taking potential of Starc, Cummins, Pattinson and Hazelwood? Will the Aussies blast our batsmen out on the fast, bouncy wickets like they did last time? Is spin plays a role in the series, the hugely underrated Lyon is vastly superior to anything England have to offer.

Were the series to be played in home conditions, I would make England marginal favourites. In Aussie conditions, I make Australia comfortable favourites. I'll say 4-1 to the Aussies- I can't see either side being capable of playing out a draw- but hope to be proved wrong.
