Gary Ballance has been dropped by England and won't be touring New Zealand.

Sorry for him but it does make life easier for Yorkshire to plan for the season.

Livingston, Wood and Stokes replace Ballance, Ball and Tom Curran otherwise as is.

Feel for Gary but maybe they've seem enough in the nets? (I know it's not the same). Either way more right handers needed so probably best all around.
Call for TKC..

I like the look of your side, Lew BUT....

Rashid, Plunkett & Willey will not be available from 10/6 to 17/7 (during the ODI`s and International T20`s), and Kane is only here for 7 weeks.

Very true Stu.

I am intrigued who the Kane replacement will be. I thought they may leave Lees at 3 but Kane's signing suggests he will move up to 2.
If they replace with another number 3 (I would imagine Pujara may be an option) then Lees is firmly moved back to opening.

Your point on Plunkett and Rashid is valid. I am less concerned about the seam bowling as we need to invest in Coad and Fisher. That leaves Bresnan and one other...If Plunks is away - Brooks is an able option.

Willey feels like a right off for the season anyway - From a CC perspective.

Rashid is the concern. He was so bit part last year in the CC. Do we look to develop a spinner? Do we try and push along with a Lyth? Surely we can't keep persevering with Rafiq who is a very good limited over bowler.

I was really surprised Ballance was even considered for the ashes squad, I just don’t think he is up to the level and maybe the coaches have decided that just watching him in the nets. I can’t believe Vince has been kept on, just looks mentally weak to me, and I would have liked a back up opening batter in to put some pressure on Stoneman.

For the comments on Livingstone, he has averaged over 48, batting 3 for lancs in over 50 inngs, so he is maybe someone they are looking to bat at 3 for England.

Lew --- This thread, on our forum, suggest that we can forget Willey also for most of the season. He is aiming to bcome a "white-ball specialist and just play in various T20 comps.

June/July is a long way off, Stu. Those three are England regulars now but a lot can happen in six months.

There was more of a case for saying Gary should not have gone to Oz than there is for leaving him out now. The trouble is if you don’t make the first test these days a tourist has precious little chance to stake his claim. He relies on an abject run from someone else, and Vince did just enough to hold his place by the skin of his teeth.

As far as our line up is concerned, as ever so much depends on availability. It also depends on the form of Rashid and Bresnan with the bat. They should be capable of good contributions at 6 and 7 - they’ve both made them before. Indeed such is Rashid’s somewhat fragile personality that when sent in at 8, he bats like a number 8. On the other hand in 2013, with little cause for doing so, we sent him in at no 6 and he promptly scored 3 centuries in the next 3 games. If he and Tim bat well then Hodd is a strong no 8, and a better keeper than any batsman keeper we could sign. If this doesn’t happen and we have to push Hodd up to 6, then we’re in trouble.

We moan about the coaching set up a lot, but I do think they face some very difficult judgements..

I don't think it will have gone unnoticed that Fisher is also a most accomplished batsman. With Lyth, Lees, Williamson, Ballance and Leaning at the top (plus Brook and K-Cadmore in reserve); then Bresnan, Rashid, Hodd, Fisher, in whatever order, batting should not be a major problem. Patto, Plunkett, Coad and Brooks are all decent, as well. So too Carver, a gutsy performer.

The attack looks a bit 'samey' - if no Plunkett (unfit, unavailable or unselected) the others are all around 80 mph, if that. If no Rashid, there's no viable CC alternative; Rafiq fine for the white ball stuff.

We'll be fine. You read it here first. Big season coming up: Fisher to break through, big time; Lyth, Lees, Bresnan, Rashid, Patterson, Brooks all back to form; Ballance unencumbered by silly England; more of the same from Coad. Get out the blue and yellow ribbons for that trophy, I hope you're keeping it polished, Essex.

David Willey seems to be a forgotten man when it comes to player availability, after all he is Sidebottom's replacement and should start against Essex if fit.

Title talk seems too optimistic given the longer term batting woes, but as long as Yorkshire are involved in an exciting end to a County Championship title finale i'll be satisfied.

With the bowlers at disposal early season, it would be great if Andy Fogarty can create a wicket with some extra pace to assist Brooks and Plunkett.

Dave - Is Fisher not faster? I thought Coad was around late 70's and was more line and length whereas Fisher was 82-85 with genuine pace?

Regarding this poin, I fully agree:

"Indeed such is Rashid’s somewhat fragile personality that when sent in at 8, he bats like a number 8. On the other hand in 2013, with little cause for doing so, we sent him in at no 6 and he promptly scored 3 centuries in the next 3 games."
