Jul 14-18, 2017 - 2nd Test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham

ENGLAND from: Joe Root (capt, Yorkshire), Alastair Cook (Essex), Keaton Jennings (Durham), Gary Ballance (Yorkshire), Jonny Bairstow (wkt) (Yorkshire), Ben Stokes (Durham), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Liam Dawson (Hampshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Mark Wood (Durham), James Anderson (Lancashire), Toby Roland-Jones| (Middlesex)

Live Scorecard
Was a poor shot. Not easy batting out there, though, unless your name is Joe Root.
Vaughan suggested he was trying so hard to get forward he went too far and got stuck. That might be close to the mark.
Re Joe, if this goes on for a substantial period of time I think we'll be talking about one of the great Test innings. They are bowling exceptionally well in helpful conditions and all other batsmen have struggled. They are now desperately searching for ways to contain him.

Gary is not a nr 3. Doubt if he will ever get runs in that position either for us or England.

I too am dead against Gary at 3, for us or England. However, given the way our openers and top order have played this year, I'm not sure I'm being very logical. Coming in after Lyth, Lees and even Handscomb, hasn't exactly been like sitting with your pads on waiting for Hobbs or Sutcliffe to get out. Gary must have been in against the new ball pretty regularly.

Any umps out there?

Why were they checking if the ball had hit the helmet of De Kock when Stokes was out. I thought that if the batsman hammered the ball at short leg and it bounced of short-legs helmet and was then caught the batsman was out. So why did it matter if it hit De Kocks helmet or not?

So far England's top three scores have been put up by Tykes. So how how does not having Root, Bairstow and Ballance in Yorkshire's lineup effect our team's performance?

Stu, I thought that, if the ball touches the helmet, this renders the 'catch' invalid.

Jonny B has been caught out (literally but illegally) by this twice I think, seemingly, not aware of the laws at the time, and it was no surprise to me to see it reviewed with Jonny at the non striker's end.

The rebound off Close's head type of dismissal was obviously pre helmet and the 5 runs awarded when the ball hits the helmet when placed on the field is the other change brought about by use of the helmet.

BTW, what a sorry lack of tail wagging.

Yes, that was the issue. Looked as if it didn't touch the helmet though

Ballance will be back with us before long. Root has absolutely sold his mate down the river bringing him back to bat at three.

The moment the ball touches a helmet, it's "dead". Any catch thereafter is invalid.
It's easy to see why this should be the case with silly point or short leg, not so clear when it's the wicket keeper. I suspect they may revise the law at some point.
