I headed up today through the snow and hail to see how the hardy diggers of week two are getting on, the wind was very cold and strong so hats off to those working (some hats off may just have been the wind!) looks like an interesting bit of stone work is appearing. Andy said the dig should reach the ice cream window in the west gate ticket office by end of season.

Why, it looks to me as if the wheelbarrow run goes over paved path most of the way!

Diggers will be getting soft....

One or two more, not sure if the stone placed there is of any interest as everyone had retired to the hut to warm up. The lastshot was taken on my way home crossing over Hartside pass and shows the maiden way roman road which heads south from the stane gate, snowy day. also a photo of temple ave getting the make over treatment. Hope you find the photos interesting

Thanks for posting, really gives a good feel for what's happening. Love the last shot, looks like it was a telephoto view from some distance away? You can almost feel the chill wind whipping around just looking at that one.

The last photo was taken with a zoom of 125mm with me braced against the car to get a steady shot with the wind blasting up the valley. I've been up there on warmer days, would hate to have been a roman hiking up the pass

Excellent photos Pete. Me and my knees are getting nostalgic already. Looks like the weather hasn't improved much. See ya next month.

Fantastic pictures! Thank you much Pete for those.

For those interested, the water channel which is being re-excavated (Pete's picture http://z1.ifrm.com/7061/121/0/p1024097/ ... jpg_12.jpg) was first dug by Eric Birley back in 1931. He left a great report on his finds (available here) including good pics of how it looked some 80 years ago:

Stones & dirt. The more things change, the more they stay the same!

Interesting to see the report from 1931, this shows what a fantastic resource we have with We Dig. Thanks Harry
