I enjoyed the visit yesterday, final day of period 1 here's hoping for a dry day. Period 2 diggers pack your cameras!
For those looking for the ideal gift I note in the shop you can now buy the Vindolanda toilet kit! Pre packed sponge on a stick. I bought the new look beanie hat and very warm it is too.

Back to Pauline's photos again today on the last day of session 1, Wediggers say a big thank you to you & Terry for the photos & updates. Here's the final batch
"Dull weather ended the first fortnight though diggers remained as keen as ever to uncover the archaeology"
A misty day

Uncovering continues by the east gate

SALVE, MATER; SALVE, PATER
(An archaeology student e-mails home)

Salve, Mater; Salve, Pater
Here I am at Vindolanda
And it is very - educating
Or it would be if it wasn’t quite so bracing

We went de-turfing with Doctor Birley
And he made us get up really early
All my best friends are in Ibiza
Not stuck up here - it’s like a freezer

Take me home, O Mater, Pater
Take me home, from Vindolanda
Trust me - this is not ingratitude
But I don’t feel good here at this latitude

You should see the magnitude of the midges
My skin is just ablaze with itches
And I don’t want this should scare ya
But my room-mate’s now got malaria

Take me home, I promise I will study
And my new T-shirt won’t then get muddy
Oh please – don’t make me stay
I’ve been here - one whole day

Respected Pater, Darling Mater
This is really a non-starter
Please let me home - if you miss me
I will even let dear Nannie hug and kiss me

Wait a minute - the wind’s stopped howling
Folk are digging - folk are trow’ling
The sun is shining, now that’s better
Vale, Mater; Vale, Pater - kindly disregard this letter.

(with acknowledgements to the late Allan Sherman,
whose Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah was a hit in AD 1963,
after the Beatles’ First LP)
