North Field feature

This feature in the image has puzzled me for a long time, could be a modern attempt by a farmer to aid drainage off his field, but it seems oddly placed to maximize drainage because it doesn't follow the slope of the field. A more interesting alternative is a cut for the Stanegate. Anybody know anything about it, or have other thoughts/speculation/comments?

I always thought it was just a "tractor way". Never checked it on the ground though.

The interesting feature within this cut for me is that at the top of it (west end) there is a large doorway with a wall running east which beth uncovered in 2009 - i'll try and add a pic if i can find one!

Thanks Kevin, was the stone thought to be Roman/in Roman context?
