No excavation this week, Andy, Justin and Kate are recording the site amongst other things prior to session 7 starting on the 1st July again. However the site is open for business if anyone's visiting the area and don't forget the Friends of Vindolanda evening this Saturday 29th June. If anyone who has not yet booked then let the Trust know if you plan to attend. I'm looking forward to it and hope to meet a few fellow diggers (mud on clothes optional) .
PS the evening is free to attend if you are a Friend of Vindolanda which as an excavator you should already be.

It's friends weekend at Vindolanda, David Goldwater has sent through some photos from his extensive collection David writes:
"Vindolanda Friends Night round about 1980.
Characters include Lord Ridley, Eric Birley (leaning against wall on right of shots), Robin and Pat"

Friends Evening 2013 was grey and a bit drizzly and the west wind was cold for this time of year, so the Hog Roast was very welcome.

We had a short welcome in the Museum gardens, after the Hog Roast and amongst the midges! then the walk up the hill for a talk by Justin, Andy. Beth gave her talk in the North Field.

We were all so cold that the Twicey got a lot of extra custom :D

Some more photos from Friends evening,
A talk from Pat about an exciting time ahead for the trust and also Andy returning lost property to a thankful owner.

Justin explaining the complex building sequence within the SE corner of the fort, the spoil heap disappearing in the background.

A great turn out of enthusiastic diggers and supporters.

Andy in the Vicus area before it is back filled

Andy explaining how the Vicus buildings will be returned to anaerobic conditions after backfilling.

Beth explaining the archaeology of the north field
