At long last, here is the PDF file Andy has been promising. The first of hopefully many eye-opening and mind-expanding treatises!

This report details trial trenches Andy & Justin opened up in November 2006 near the Hedley building (the coach house behind the museum). The excavation formed one part of the application process to create the new Vindolanda study center. The results were... stimulating. B)

Enjoy!

A useful piece of archaeology even if it only shows the lack of activity on this site. Maybe's just as well. If anything was found it would certainly put the plans for the study centre well and truly back on the drawing board.

Andy - What contingencies for the plans did the Trust have in place if anything had been found. e.g delay construction until excavation and recording or review the plan in general?

Hi Duncan,

Sorry it has taken a while to get back to you on this one. Our plans were to conduct a full excavation should we have found anything on the proposed site. The land is not protected, so we would not have reuired an SMC for the work, and The Vindolanbda Trust is the landowner. However, the Trust would have had to modify its plans for the study center to avoid anything archaeological in that area had we found something. Sadly, nothing there, although to be honest, we didnt expect anything. Just one of the various hoops you have to jump through these days.

More fun will be the full excavation report for the past two years of work, which should be out by the beginning of June.
