It's November, days are short, but it is a long way to the next digging season. And since there are not many new postings these last weeks, I thought I upload some Vindolanda finds from my archive. These were made in 1998.

Hi there

Its good for a relative newcomer like me to see how much has been done in the years since these photos were taken. Thanks for taking trouble to do it.

No trouble at all; I just forgot to mention that I was only there as a visitor at the time. As an excavator I am a newcomer as well.

Has anyone else out there any photos of the same or nearby area from later years? It would be interesting to sort of have a "time lapse" of that part of the site to see the change in levels, stonework, soils, wheelbarrows etc.

I think that'd be a brilliant idea! The history of the excavations at Vindolanda are worth looking at in their own right.

I was actually thinking it would be interesting to photograph the entire 2012 season every week from the same perspective. It would be practical this year as the excavation will mostly be out in the open and in a more concentrated area.....

Maybe from the wooden tower? Or from up by the tool shed?

I don't go up the replica Towers very often but in 1992 I did.

In 1995 I cheekily photographed one of the display boards at the Westgate Entrance gallery but don't know when the aerial photo was taken - quite a while before 1995....

Re weekly photograph - maybe a volunteer from each week - ?from the Roll Call - could take it on the Friday pm, log it onto the specific page of the We Dig'ers site at their convenience. (If photos get out of order can they be shuffled to correct? - I am not too au fait with IT).

The spot from which the photo would be taken will need to be decided at Week 1 and a "marker" left. As this is for the WeDig'ers site only, I don't imagine that there would be any problems with copyright etc. Maybe Andrew could set us straight on that.

Just a few thoughts for consideration.

Ps If it comes about, I will be happy to do Weeks 10 and 11.

Best wishes to all for Christmas and New Year.

Kathryn.

Definitely a great idea. We would probably need Andy's help to know the likely extent of digging over the course of the season, so the photo location is set correctly from the start.

Would also need to position the camera so its facing roughly north, so the sun doesn't screw up the picture (if/when it decides to come out). When I've done similar things myself in the past I found it helped to have "landmarks" at each corner of the picture, so I knew I had the photo pretty accurately repeating.

People with SLR cameras would be ideal, because it would be easier to define the focal length (ie: set camera at 40mm setting), but I'm guessing we'd be doing well just to get a picture every week, let alone require it be done with fancier cameras.

I will do the week I'm on site. May want to start up another list Harry so we can encourage people to sign up for a shot.

This would be a nice feature for the "official" Vindolanda site too. It could appear on both.

One hesitates to propose an increase in his already exhausting duties, but could Kevin could be persuaded to do this?
