In the background is the main east/west paved road and beyond that are the granaries.

May 7th looking south (continues to the right of the previous photo)
Central area of the barracks. The buildings shapes and sizes vary and were changed over time from 3rd century barracks to 4th century and later, houses. Most of what we see is from 4th century and later. Up to this week (4) there are up to four rows of buildings north of the road.

The buildings here are separated by an alleyway. The intervallum road (running north/south) is off to the right but can be seen continuing south alongside the granary, beyond the road

May 7th. The fort’s western wall, just north of the gatehouse. The western wall of the first fort is leaning outwards here. The larger stones of the second fort wall were built over the remains, but the inner face was only supported by earth.

Hi!
We've enjoyed keeping up to date via "We dig Vindolanda" and look forward to our turn to dig 14-18 June 2009 – just a month away!
Best Wishes, and much success before then,
Averil & Ian

Righteous picture Anthea!!

Now, is that "whacking" or "bashing" you're performing there?

19th May. Looking NE ( Week 6 in Area ‘A’)
This is the eastern side of the barracks area.

Last week the soil heap was moved outside the fort’s north gate overlooking the Stanegate road. Travelling time 3 mins per trip, plus an altitude allowance! It’s a killer. :-/
