Not fair!! Great to see some familiar faces at the dig. Not fair that I can't be amongst them this year. Hope you all had a great time!

This is the Area A Team for the 25th-29th July.

Had a great week digging, weather was mostly grey with occasional drizzle, apart from the Thursday when we had the photo! We were mostly excavating in the barrack rooms or looking for the underlying (2nd fort?) wall.

Some of us also attended an evening lecture at the Roman Army Museum given by a team of archaeologists from Vietnam (with suitable translation by an English historian working with them!). This was the first time ever that this has been allowed by the Vietnamese authorities and, apart from being an interesting lecture (a project to investigate a long wall with remarkable parallels to Hadrian's wall), I felt privileged to be able to attend such an special event.

As always, the week was over far too quickly and I'm looking forward to being a volunteer again next year. :)

I was doing some reading on Roman trade with India a while back and was dumbfounded to discover that roman coins made it as far out as Vietnam! Specifically, a site called Oc Eo on the Mekong that was excavated starting in the 1940s. Although a few "romans" may have made it to the Imperial court in China, I assume that coins traveled more freely.

Not clear from the article I read if it was from mints in the empire or were Indian copies of roman originals. Some of the Indian copies were actually equvalent in execution, and a darn site better in precious metal content.

Area A team. Week 19, 15-19th Aug.

Wouldn’t you think someone would help that poor man up off the ground?
Cautionary tale; that’s Gordon who hurt his back lifting large stone on day one, washed pots for two days, then uncovered an Altar (under the rampart) on the last day.

The last day before the MA students arrive next week.

This line-up will be in the new Eagle's Eye film because final filming took place this afternoon. Yes, including me, and no, I didn't take a bag of finds, bowl and brushes with me. Poor Jackie had to put up with 'helpful hints' from me for about 2 hours while she cleaned her drain, and then at the end, she found a whopping great pot lid!

It was very difficult to follow Andy's instructions and NOT look up at the helicopter - even the public were instructed not to wave at it, and from what I could see they were very well behaved :D

The team were a great crowd this week - hope we all meet up again next year, although Mike and I will be back to the usual 2 middle weeks in May while we think about moving up here permanently.

I forgot to send along these pix last week of our nicely cleaned sink in the 'Club House' - it's a nice one of Kevin as well but he didn't actually do any of the cleaning <g>!

Dilys did all the hard work, and it is hard work because I've tried to clean it in the past but obviously didn't use the right bleach.

She cleaned the fridge as well, so a BIG THANK YOU from all of us.
