4th Apr. Easter Sunday first day of 2010 season.

Weather, cool breeze with very welcome sunny periods in the afternoon.
Photo looking east, inside the fort.
This area is on the north side of the paved road from the west gate, the road is on the right.

Hopefully a good paved road from the north gate should run through this trench to join that east/west road, this will frame the north-west quadrant of the fort.

4th Apr. looking north-east.
Looking across the cobbled road to the east of the barracks (2009 excavations).
The mystery mound/ spoil heap from earlier excavations is just beyond the wheelbarrows.

Michael, great pictures, keep it up!

Those of us who try to follow from afar are ever in your debt. And debtors should be undemanding, yet if I might make a request?
An occasional shot from further back might help us figure out where the trenches lie in respect to other landmarks.

See you in under three weeks, and the first pint is on me!

Looking forward to that Tim.

This is probably not what you had in mind but have you seen the aerial photos taken by Adam Stanford at the end of last season.

Portfolio-Adam Stanford

or try this (I can never do a live link) ^o)

http://www.theimagefile.com/web/aerial- ... folio.html

On the one showing the north-west quadrant of Vindolanda fort, on the right you can see that road (via principalis?) from the west gate and just about see the north gatehouse on the left.
That mound shows up quite well (top-centre), the “Area A” barrier fence is now to the east of the mound and will include the road (via praetoria?) from the north gate. This years work started just south of the mound, all this area should be excavated by September, so you have loads to do!

That link seems to have worked :$

Week 1 - findings

A large roadside drain (running East/West) on the north side of the street to the HQB. The south/east and west walls of a barrack/stable or workshop with a later building constructed over it. The via praetoria, denuded of its flagstones (thus far) anf the western barrack wall on the eastern side of the road.

Good job all week 1 excavators. It is always tough getting the new trench going and the weather was mixed, although invariably cold. Still, despite this I think we have made a reasonably good start, and we should start to rapidly move on in the next couple of weeks.

more pictures anon

Sounds like a brilliant week - thanks a bunch for the details Andy!

For folks orienting themselves, here are a couple mockups I did based on descriptions by MichaelH and Andy.

Michael's two pics of Day 1 seem to be about here (arrow shows location and direction of camera; yellow shows general area that had been uncovered):

Andy's description of the end of the week looks something like this, I believe:

Yellow is what seems to be the area uncovered; brown is the roadway (shame the flagstones are gone!); the structures are in dotted rectangles; and the drain is the dotted line at the bottom of the yellow area.

Is that about right?

11 April 2010

Enjoyed the first week's digging and have one or two pictures to share. This is inside the fort looking towards the south and shows the drain beside the road.

Next picture is inside the fort with the drain to the far right. Picture taken looking towards the east with Barcombe Hill in the background. Corner and wall of a possible barrack block in centre of photo and also wall of another possible barrack block in front of Andrew.

Inside the fort looking north towards the concealed but very tidy spoil heap. A possible barrack block wall with large stone from later building lying on top, bottom left of photo.
