MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION OF ANI CATHEDRAL OPENED

http://www.azg.am/_EN/20020925/2002092510.shtml

Did Catholocos Karekin or his subordinates lift a finger to stop the damage to Ani caused by the stome quarrying for his new cathedral in Yerevan? No, he did not!

Did Armenia's representative at UNESCO do anything more than repeatedly deny any damage was being caused when Turkey raised the matter with UNESCO? No, he did not!

And, for that matter, has Claude Moutafian and his fellow French academics from the Sorbonne done anything to protest against the damage to Ani caused by the Turkish restorations and ham-fisted excavations? No, they have not, even though they are part of a Franco-Turkish team working at Ani.

So, Karekin wants a "complete reconstruction" of the cathedral. In recent years there have been many "restorations" of historic churches in Armenia undertaken by the Armenian church. Most have been just as damaging to these important monuments as the Turkish "restorations" at Ani. This is because they are undertaken not to conserve the church but to return it to a fully rebuilt state in order that it can be used by the Armenian Church.

Karekin's concept of a "complete reconstruction" of the cathedral, just like the Turkish Ministry of Culture's restorations at Ani, goes completely against all the accepted methods of modern archaeological conservation.

What right does this head of a repressive and out-moded religious cult have to comment on matters of art and culture? For him and his Church, the cathedral is worthless as an historical monument. The Armenian church has no more right to decide on the future of the Ani cathedral than a group of neo-Pagans have a right to decide on the future of the Parthenon.

MILLENNIUM CELEBRATION OF ANI CATHEDRAL OPENED

On September 22, a conference dedicated to the 1,000-th Anniversary Celebration of the Consecration of the Cathedral of Ani, opened in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin. His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, presided during the inaugural plenary session. The conference titled "The Glory of Ani" is organized under the auspices of His Holiness and the initiative of the "St. Mesrop Mashtots" Scientific and Cultural Center of Oshakan, in the Diocese of Aragatsotn.

His Eminence Archbishop Shahe Ajemian welcomed the participants of the conference in his opening address. His Eminence Archbishop Mesrop Ashjian, UNESCO'S Armenia representative Mr. Hambardzum Minasian, French-Armenian Claude-Armen Moutafian, and Architect Varazdat Haroutunian delivered lectures and reports dedicated to Ani and its architectural monuments.

In his remarks, His Holiness Karekin II accorded great importance to the jubilee ceremonies dedicated to the Cathedral's consecration, noting: "It is necessary to stress our determination in focusing the attention of the international community on this magnificent architectural monument. She (the Cathedral) enriches the treasury of world culture, and our goal is complete reconstruction, preservation and bequeathing for the coming generations".

The conference will last until September 24, with sessions taking place in Oshakan, and in the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia, in Yerevan. More than thirty historical, architectural, scientific and cultural lectures and reports from Armenia and the Diaspora will be presented.

The main cathedral of the capital city of Ani was consecrated in the year 1,001 A.D., during the Pontificate of Catholicos of All Armenians Sargis I Sevantsi (Catholicos 992 - 1019), and the reign of King Gagik. The designer of the 16 columned, domed basilica was the Architect Trdat. The ruins of Ani are visible from the present-day Armenian border with Turkey.

ANI CATHEDRAL JUBILEE MARKED

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 23, ARMENPRESS: In 2001, when Armenia was marking
the 17 centuries of conversion to Christianity, there was another
major jubilee in that year, more particularly, the 1000-th
anniversary of consecration of the Mother Cathedral in Ani, one of
the capitals of the mediaeval Armenia, but its celebration was
decided to suspend for one year to focus on the Christianity jubilee.
The Cathedral in Ani is one of the most remarkable masterpieces
of mediaeval Armenian architecture. Its foundation was laid in 989 by
king Smbat II, but because of his early death the construction was
continued by Gagik I.
A conference of scientists dealing with medieval architecture is
being held in Echmiadzin, from September 22 to September 27 dedicated
to this jubilee. It is chaired by Catholicos Karekin II, the head of
Armenian Church.
A range of lectures dedicated to Cathedral, in particular, and to
Armenian architecture, in general, was made by prominent Armenian
historians and architects.

I can not believe the justification I am hearing for systematic distruction of an antient City. The City of Ani was built by an ancient population at the hight of their sculpture and arcitectural prowess. Turkey is not worthy to undertake the restoration of Ani because it does not have the intellectual undertaking to even understand the phylosofical and cultural meaning of holly city of ANI.

But dear sir.
What else can be done?Ani is in Turkey it cannot be shifted to another western state, so the solution is to get the U.N. to act and to manage the reconstruction of the city.
Another choice would be to have a war beetween Turkey and Armenia which would be impossible.
