Hi Guys,

Open opinion here.

If you had around $14k to spend on a daily watch, based on
5513 Gilt or 1680 Red which one would you honestly
pick.

Criteria is;

Parts will still be available / serviceable in 10 years time
(not by Rolex service centre)
Will appreciate in value
Has more character and looks classy.

Thanks...aa

A minty red sub is probably easier to find for that money. A minty gilt will cost you quite a bit more. Equal condition I would get the gilt but as you have a budget I would get the red sub as condition is key to me. One idea is to spend more for that perfect gilt but it will be much more than the 14k you mention.

Best of luck!

Your budget will not buy you a nice 5513 gilt.

Movement parts for both watches are essentially the same and widely available. Original dials and hands are no longer found hence often replicated.

The 5513 gilt would be it for me.

Red wins for class and value for money
Why would you not send it to rolex for a service?

Hi,

Rolex Australia will totally replace anything
on the watch that looks faded etc.

I had my 5513 Mk1 maxi dial assessed by them, which had never been serviced
They wanted to change, dial, bezel, hands and pearl.

I took the watch back and had internals replaced
by other watch repairers.

They have a strict policy here and will not budge.

As a consequence if I need parts I buy off VRF and have
a local watch maker service the watch.

Rolex Australia are just archaic in their practice and
don't really care about the client.

not sure you can find a gilt that would be that great for $14k, I think you could find a pretty cool Red sub without papers for 14 so id lean that way.

as everything is always unecessarily complicated and difficult, especially in Eastern states,

When I went into Collins Street they wanted to replace the very parts that were important to my watch, so I took the same path as you!!!

The Gilt 5513 will be my choice.
Reason: The number of Gilt 5513 is lesser in existence than a 1680 Red Sub. There are MK1-MK6 series of Red Sub 1680 and they were made over a long extended period of time (more than 10 years - correct me if I am wrong). Gilt 5513 existed only for years lesser than the Red Sub 1680
