When did Rolex start to put...

... the crown on the clasp outsides?
My 1945 Air-King with rivited expandable bracelet has a clasp internally marked correct and stamped 248 for second quarter 1948.
On the outside the clasp does not have the crown.
The end links at that time have been straight...

I have a similar riveted bracelet dated '54 (17mm for bubbleback, with similar straight end pieces), which does have the coronet on the outer clasp.

The earliest such clasp that I can find reference to is in the fine Dowling and Hess book .

Page 309 (Ed. 2) shows an expanding rivet oyster bracelet with a Rolex emblem clasp date-stamped 2/51 (manufacturer 'Mecan').

I have a 1948 SpeedKing that came to me on this Gay Freres rice bead bracelet.
