complicated movement in the Daytona would have made it pricier... I'm surprised the GMT cost more!

Clearly Rolex didnt think the manual winded Sport cosmograph watch was the bigger selling item. GMT's have only gained their popularity in this decade. As i recall, GMTs were regarded as affordable sport watches (entry level) back in the days.

the Bangkok Post dating back to 1980. It's priced in Thai baht which I believe was around 25:1 but you can still get a sense of proportion comparing the new value of one watch against another.
