Recently got hold of a 1953 Rolex owned by my grandfather. Need some help determining the exact model.
The paperwork states that it's a 5501 but I couldn't find any additional information on this, is it an Explorer or Air King? The chronometer paperwork puts it as f.5501 movement, case no 935452...
Any recommendations on how to get this restored? Apparently the service center here in Singapore doesn't handle anything prior to 1970.
The F5501 is the movement number on the autowind likely.
There should be another number without a letter which is the base movement number.
If you could show the timing cert and the guarantee with any numbers I could help sort that for you.
Should be a 6286 It has the milled bezel which is indicated by the (6) in the model number.
It is basically a 6284 with a different bezel.
You can find this also between the lugs if you remove the bracelet.
I would gladly service it for you but I am in the USA.
If you don't mind sending it I can take care of it.
I have a good bit of new and used material for the movement. Gaskets and the rest are standard fair.
A good cleaning and lubrication with regulation and water test and you should be good to go.
