West Loch LSTs?

West Loch LSTs?

I came across these two pictures on eBay of LSTs at Pearl Harbor (the seller had incorrectly dated these as being from December 7). Now my guess is that these are likely to be from the West Loch disaster. Does anyone with knowledge of the West Loch disaster recognize these from any other published sources or are these new? They look like they were snapshots and may be out of someones personal collection. Any identifying marks for the ships were burnt off, but can any battlefield detective out there help identify which two these are?

Try Google, I read a report that showed the ships and I think I found it in Google under West Loch LST's. It also told the story of how it happend and the delay of D Day, I think.

It looks like remains in the second picture could possibly be that of LST-480, which remains at Pearl to this day.

Brolly, If you want to speak with a West Loch survivor, I know of one. I think he'd be willing to share. He's not on line, but if you like, I'll mail copies of the photos to see if they kindle any memories.

Brolly, if you could send the office your email address, I have found a few pictures of LST's at West Loch in our files. 325office@lstmemorial.org They are more clear and right after the incident.

I think the ports of San Diego or Little Creek would be great locations. It would take an LCVP loaded with cash to tow and prep either of the LST's in West Loch. No Idea on how to do it nor how to "steal" from the Navy. It would be a paper work drill and it would help if you had politicians lending support. Perhaps some of the 'old timers' involved in the 325 could give some direction. Also, in San Diego, you have the USS Midway group and the California Maritine Museum with a group in Norfolk that has a BB on the waterfront. NASSCO in San Diego built 17 of them and the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard built 3. Philadelphia is having big issues supporting the Battle Cruiser Olympia. If I remember correctly it is a cash flow and maintainance issue.

Hope this helps. I do not have the 2 to 3 million dollars to chip into the pool.

Still, Its a hell of an Idea. Keep us posted.

Good Luck,

JIM
