"U.S. Sends Marines to South Vietnam

1965: South Vietnam requests two U.S. Marine battalions to sure up security at the Da Nang air base. This will effectively free up some of the South Vietnamese for combat. The White House agreed to the request and sent Gen. Nguyen Van Thieu, chief of the armed forces, 3,500 U.S. Marines"

Thank you, Vietnam Veterans!

Does anyone know the number of LSTs that served during the Korean War? The Viet Nam war? What about the Balklans? The Gulf?

I know there were many LSTs that continued their service after WWII during Korea, VietNam and the times in between. There were even new Types built after WWII and Korea. Some participated in the build up during the Cuban Missle Crisis... and during the Gulf War. I've never heard the numbers though. Is there a website somewhere that would detail this type of information?

Sealift for DESERT SHIELD/STORM, with no prior buildup at all, represents the largest and fastest sealift to a single theater in the history of warfare. It was also the farthest, with the average voyage covering nearly 8,700 miles.

Appreciate your research on the gator ships that served in these theaters...their stories need to be heard. I trust the 325 can pull them into the fold. LST-1167

Of course many other ships supported all Wars, but did not meet the various requirements to gain a theater medal or commendation. Usually you have to be in the area a certain amount of time or directly involved in an event.
