George Louden thought some of you would like to see what one of the LST engines look like. These are 900hp diesel locomotive type engines. There are two on the ship.

Often wondered how well the ship runs when one engine is down for repair when the ship is underway at sea. What speed
can the ship make with only one engine online?

I remember we lost an engine aboard USNS LST-325 aftet running thru the tail end of a hurricane between Greenland and Labrador. I had hitched a ride in her from BW-1 after the plane I was on was stuck at BW-1 with a engine out.

A LST reportedly lost one engine on the way home and the ship's speed with only one engine was figured to be about 7 knots. Of course the speed is going to be widely different depending on the load. I'm figuring the stated LST was pretty much empty heading home.

The design speed for LSTs is 9 knots, so it didn't loose much with the loss of one engine and the ship apparently being rather empty. Surely with a loaded ship it would bog down much more and get speeds of maybe half that 7 knots.

This is a question for my 2005 East Coast Voyage crewmates.

On the leg from Washington, D.C. to Buzzards Bay, Mass., I remember we were way ahead of schedule and slowed one day to 5 knots. I was in the wheelhouse but don't remember how we did it.

The question is:

Did we go to one engine? or did we half-speed both?

I assume we slowed RPMs in both engines, but I know when the Mobile to D.C. crew was coming around the Florida peninsula they had to go to one engine when the other was down for repairs. Is this correct? (I was not onboard during that leg.)

This one taken June 2006. Methinks it is the starboard one, maties. Arghh..

But who knows - I'm currently having trouble with gangways versus ladders

I know that photo. It was taken when Butch Vaughn, Fred and I were installing the compressed air tanks in the starboard shaft alley. You can see the black pipe we were using on top of the gearbox.
We were lucky big Fred was around to lug that last air tank up onto the rack with Butch and I.

Sherry you are correct. That is a good picture you have of the Starboard Main.
